I have 2 cats and 2 dogs, but I have always wanted a "different" animal. I have had a ferret But I was thinking this time a bat or a snake. I have NO idea if you can have a bat as a pet or if they are legal in Virginia. Now the issues I am having with wanting a snake are I don't have it in me to feed it live food and my people said they would stop coming over if I got one. Any ideas?

I don't think you can keep bats, they need the freedom to fly, and eat bugs. A snake doesn't usually eat live food, unless it is having a problem eating. You buy frozen mice, thaw them in warm water, then feed. You really need to decide how much space, time, and money you have for another pet. Then do ALOT of research before you decide anything, find something that would fit into your life. One thing I can say about having herps (reptiles %26 amphibians) for pets, your electric bill will kill you, generally speaking they need under tank heaters, basking lights, UVB lights, Possibly a night time heat emmiter, some need misters/waterfalls, etc. You also need to have a set up secure enough so that your cats can't get at the pet.
Bats are illegal to own as domestic pets, as far as I know.
The only snake I know of, that doesn't require mice, is the Garter snake. Stays relatively small, and prefers a diet of crickets, mealworms, etc.
Have you considered a Sugar Glider? (Keep in mind, you have to do research, and be able to provide the proper amount of attention/care. They're high maintainence!)
you could get a chinchilla. they are like so soft! or you could get a finch.
Bats and snakes aren't very good pets around cats, who love to kill those kinds of animals. I don't have any suggestions though.
How about a skunk? Their musk glands can be removed.
SUGAR GLIDERS ARE GREAT but they don't do good around cats- might get hurt
Bats are illegal. More people contract rabies via bats than any other animal.
Non-poisonous snakes are fine. However, you should find out first what snakes are legal in your area. Snakes are not easy to care for. Their environment is very important for them to thrive. You need to do extensive research on snake before getting one.
No you can't have a bat as a domestic pet. For a short time a couple of years ago they were considering bringing Egyptian fruit bats into the pet trade but found that very few people could offer the required care, and they didn't make suitable pets in the long run.
I agree that sugar gliders are great pets. They do require a great deal of care and people time, so if you don't have at least a couple hours of focused socializing time to give a day then they might not be for you. If you think you are still interested then you can look into them at http://www.glideruniversity.org/index/...
Good luck finding the perfect companion for you
well if you are insistent on a snake they do sell frozen mice and rats. They are already dead and quick frozen so they provide the same nutrition as the live animals. Unfortunately a lot of snakes and reptiles are picky and wont eat them. If you are interested in going with the frozen I would check with the pet store first and make sure that the snake you are interested in will eat them willingly.
you should get a chinchilla, they r so cute and the softest thing on earth verry playfull and they love to jump... plus they dont eat other animals :)
Tarantulas are great pets and interesting to watch. They don't require a lot of maintenance, they're completely harmless (unless you're a cricket or a grasshopper), and they can be quite tame and fun to play with. They can also live up to 20 years. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to own a bat anywhere. Snakes are ok, but they're going to want their mice (or larger rodents, if you get like a 200 lb, Burmese Python) alive and kickin'...it's what they do. I personally think it's a shallow friend who won't visit because they don't understand your pet!
do all your research on the specific snake that you want. once you know all the facts it can be quite comforting to people when your well versed and can spout all your knowledge at the drop of a hat. if you can get a smaller snake they can eat crickets and other bugs. if you get a larger one than you will have to get someone to feed it for you.
