girlfriends mother has a dog that s cleaning its self she thinks it has a hairball and wants to give it hairball medicine for a cat will this harm the dog???

I wouldn't give a dog cat medicine.
I have dogs and never thought they had a hairball. If that is the case just have her add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil to it's food. It will pass. If she thinks it is caught in the dogs throat, please go to the vet.

It shouldn't harm the dog, most hairball remedies are simply lubricants to help pass the hairball. Read the label, it's probably petroleum jelly with malt flavoring. A dab of vaseline does the same thing.
