Has anyone ever lost a pet?

i lost a cat and i miss him so much!i wish he was here!
Answers:
there is a bridge connectin' heaven and earth. it is called 'the rainbow bridge' because of it's many beautiful colors...

just this side of the bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass...when a beloved pet dies, it goes to this place. there is always fresh food and cool water and warm spring weather. the old and frail are made young again...those who were maimed are made whole again. they play all day long with each other in this land.

but there is one thing missing...they are not with their special person who loveed them on earth...

so, each day, they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up... the body quivers, the eyes stare! and this one suddenly runs from the group!...

you have been seen...and when you and yer special friend meet again, you take him in yer arms and embrace...yer faces is kissed again and again as you look once more into the eyes of yer trusting pet...

then ...both of you cross 'the rainbow bridge' together...never again to be separated...

hope that helps ya some, my friend...i know it helped me when my princess abigail died this past easter...
Nope I know exactly where they are buried
I have also lost a cat, pets can become such a big part of your life. Its very sad and its only human to miss them very much.
I used to have a cat. I had him when I was living with someone else. I moved out, and couldn't take him with me, so I left him. And he came up missing. I felt so guilty for leaving him. I think about him and miss him a lot.
yeah...we lost our maltese dog...we took him out to get his teeth cleaned, and the vet gave him too much anesthetic, then he gave him a counter anesthetic because he didn't think he was waking up fast enough...he had a stroke, couldn't walk and was breathing really fast...didn't know his name and he couldn't even lift his head...before he died he was hemoraging, and then blood came out of his mouth, and then he died...it was the worst thing i ever saw in my entire life...we did an autopsy and it showed that there was blood in his lungs...i wasn't really that sad, but i missed him a lot...it hit my mom and sister really hard.
yes ive lost around 14 birds :(
No. I live on a busy street though and have seen two of my dogs get run over.both as a child. My german shepard by a fire truck and a poodle by a corvette. No one saw it coming.

Has anyone ever heard of the good rats?

Answers:
OMG, OF COURSE!!! I used to have a cute black %26 white rat as a pet. And let me tell u something. They are the most cleanest, social, %26 friendly animals in the world. People give such bad names to rats that everbody thinks they're ugly %26 nasty %26 gross. But its just the opposite. Got to PETCO %26 buy one. Its really fun. =)
no rats are pure evil and ugly creatures
Domestic rats can be wonderful pets-- a lot less testy than hamsters and ferrets. They keep themselves clean (which doesn't actually mean that their cage is odorless unfortunately...) and they're VERY intellegent.

Of course, my best friend used to work at pet store and she said she could always tell when one of the kids that worked under her forgot to feed the rats.

They have a tendancy to cannibalize.

If you're interested in getting a rodent pet, get a guinea pig. They grow to be about one or two pounds heavier than a rat and they look like over-sized hamsters. They also have to be seriously harrassed into biting you. Sweetest little things I've ever worked with.
i breed rats and all of mine are good rats. i have about 20 of them and they are good rats. i think they are all good if you know how to care and handle them. if any one says they are all bad then they have never owned a rat before. yes there are good rats and yesthere are bad rats but the bad rats are usually sold as food for snakes. i breed mine for myself and for pet stores in my area. i love my rats and so do my kids. rats are great pets for kids also.
Coo Coo Blues!!!

Has anyone ever heard of Blue Barn Dog Food?

It's suppose to be the best dog food out for pitbulls.
Answers:
I've heard of it, but I'm not sure it's still available. I tried to find a website for it, but couldn't.
Never heard of it, you have a link for it?
Maybe you mean Blue Buffalo??
No and why would a certain dog food be best for pits? I have not heard of dog food that is BREED specific, and I raised dogs before and have had numerous types of dogs.

Has anyone ever adopted an animal from ouside of the country?

I have read about all the scams and what not and I was just wondering what people thought about the process as long as they took the money upon receipt of the animal.

Has anyone adopted an animal this way and had success?
My biggest concern is diseases and things like that not so much the scam thing cause I would never send money if I didn't see the animal first.
Just curious about people's opinions.
Answers:
ive never done that and i dont reccomend doing that or you may get a disease but if you do you may want to request to get it vaccinated and also to see the papers to make sure..
I know people who did it a long time ago. They went to Tijuana and filed all the proper paperwork, and brought home beautiful German Sheppard's.
Then again why not adopt a pet from your local SPCA shelter.
You never know, you might just find a terrific buddy there too.
Why risk buying a sick pet, save your self some $, and all the drama.
Good Luck!
Be careful while dealing to buy an animal. Through local authority you can can ask related question who deals in importing the animal to your country. What are the ways and means and delivery procedure as well as charges, they will let you know and i believe medical certification also becomes the responsibility of importing country so no need to worry, consult related local authority, you will get all info.

Has anyone else heard? Rabbit Owners?

I doubt this applies to many folks that use this board, but I thought I would mention it. There's been an outbreak of the Calicivirus in pet rabbits in the Adelaide SA region. Calici is used to control wild rabbits, but is affecting captive rabbits in the area. Anyone who has a pet rabbit that is not immunised should do so immediately! The first signs are no appetite for 12 to 24 hours, followed by internal bleeding, then death. Good luck Bunny owners!
Answers:
The information that you sent out is very important. There are rabbit shows in the area, and people don't want their rabbits getting sick (no one does). You probably saved some bunnies by posting this note.

Has anyone ever heard of a Cabbit?

about 10 yrs ago it was a yuppie thing to breed a cat with a rabbit i was just wondering if there are any today still hopping around?
Answers:
I actually never heard of it before so I looked it up and this is what I found:

"Cabbits" with rabbit-like hind legs appear to be malformed Manx-type cats."

and

"In "The Ethics of Breeding for Deformity" I wrote: "Nature sometimes makes genetic mistakes. [...] 'Cabbits' are genetic quirks (often, but not exclusively, found in the Manx breed) where the hind end resembles that of a rabbit rather than a cat. "

the person on the site goes on to say a little more so check it out on my source.
I was under the impression that species can not cross breed.
I've hurd of them but i don't think they are really breed with rabbits. I've hurd there lacking a bone in there back legs which make's them hop.
no never heard of them
it is impssibe to bread a cat with a rabbit the cemistry dosn't work
I've heard of this, and all of the photos are merges or montage. This breed doesn't exist! When will people understand that? It is impossible because of the tremendous differences between the animals.

Rabbits (I have one)

Veggie lovers
Chewers
Live in cage
Run more
Not independent
And very loyal, dumb as it may seem
Clean themselves

Cats
Litter boxes
Claws (not like rabbits don't have them, but these are worse!)
Mews
Ears that are triangular
Eats MEAT
Loves cuddles
Very independent.

I don't think you should look into this anymore. It's a dead subject. Sorry to disappoint you.

EDIT: Cats clean themselves, sorry, I left that out.
Rabbits and Cats are from two completely different genus' and cannot interbreed.
There is no such thing as a "cabbit." It is impossible for cats and rabbits to interbreed.
You must be an anime fan. :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cabbit...
Only in the anime cartoon Tenchi Muyo. Her name was Ryo-Ohki.
There is no such thing.. It can't happen.. It would be like saying you have a dog x cat breeding.. cats and rabbits cannot reproduce together.
If yuppies are telling you about cabbits, they are teasing you.. think that you are very gullible.

And a Yuppy is a young urban professional.. an ambitious young adult, usually college-educated, living in or near a large city, with a professional career and an affluent lifestyle.

What about that suggests that they are breeding cabbits???
Must be an urban legend- you CANT breed a cat and a rabbit, not naturally or scientifically. Different species don't mix.

Has anybody tried drinking milk directly from cow's udders by suckling at her ****?

In Fear factor, one day someone drank goat's milk by directly suckling at her ****.Goat's **** are smaller than cow's. So is the same action possible to do with cows and can we draw milk like that?
Answers:
you can get milk like that but I would not try it. You can actually get sick from drinking straight from a cow. If you were raised on a farm and grew up drinking raw milk then you'd be alright but most people that arn't used to drinking raw milk tend to get sick from it.
Yes, but why?
You're sick man!
dont know that's weird, eew!
Go find a boyfriend!
Yes it's possible, what are you doing? Practicing for Fear Factor..lol. P.S Don't get kicked!
If You've Ever Drank Raw Milk and it never made you sick , you should be all right , dont drink it if you've never had it before ! you'll get sick !!

Has anybody heard of Brenderup horse trailers?

I need a horse trailer, but only have a Honda Odyssey and a Toyota Highlander and cant afford a truck. Are they any good? What is there average price? Do you think my cars would work? Thanks!
Answers:
In my opinion, you are just asking for trouble with trying to tow a trailer of any kind with the two vehicles you have. You really need a truck for towing any kind of a heavy load. That is what they are made for. Cars are only good for a short distance with a lighter trailer. (think very small Uhaul). I do not think that you could haul your horse safely with a car or that your car would last very long under these conditions. You may want to think about trading them on for a truck. Good Luck
Yes they would work. You should weigh your horse(s) and look in your cars manual book and look at the maximum weight it can hold! Also weigh the trailer when you get it.
Brenderup trailers have a great reputation. I believe they are excellently made. But they are not cheap!!

Even with a Brenderup you will need to seriously consider weight and wheel base length before you can decide if it's safe to pull your horse with your car. Talk to someone who's experienced with horse trailers.

Good luck!

Has anybody ever dealt with an eye injury with their horse?

I never in my years with horses have dealt with an eye injury. My mare started tearing up about about two weeks ago and her eye would run. I thought perhaps allergies, and she didn't seem to be in pain, so I didn't think much of it. But it continued, so today I had the vet out to look at her.

She has an ulcer on her eye and has to take both a pill and and have cream in her eye 4 times a day. She still has sight in the eye and the vet seems to think she'll be okay and we caught it early, but I guess I just want some reassurance an ulcer will clear up with proper care and be fine. I feel really bad that I didn't recognize it as an injury at first and wasted time having a vet look at her. If anybody else has dealt with eye injuries in horses or knows of a good resource in which to get information, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.
Answers:
I have had this happen twice to two different horses over the years and yes it should clear up and been fine. The biggest thing is getting the cream in the eye properly. And you almost have to call the vet since the cream is an antibiotic that they prescribe. And most want to see the animal before handing out the meds. So you did everything just right.

HaMsTeRs???>???

Will a pets store buy hamsters or take them if i give the hamsters to them or do i need something like a vet .. document saying that its healthy or anything like that ???
Answers:
Pet stores get their hamsters from a specific ''breeder''. They're not allowed, by the corporation, to accept hamsters from just anyone. If they accepted your hamsters, they wouldn't be able to sell them, they'd basically have a ''free to good home'' sign on them.
Check your local shelters %26 rescues to see if they will take in your hamsters.
Petco may take them the petco near me takes them and puts them up for adoption but you dont get payed. Or you could check out petfinder www.petfinder.com
If you bring them to the pet store they will accept them back. They will put them up for adoption. Blame it on them. :) They will gladly accept them back but won't pay you for them. If you want to sell them you have to do that for yourself.

Hamsters??!?

i have a mean hamster named Newman, how do i get him to be nice
Answers:
How old is newman and when did you get him.

Also what breed is he?

If you have a new hamster- here's some advice.

1. give him time to adjust to his surroundings. Don't try to handle him right away. Just make sure that you spend time talking to him, get him use to your presence, even if you pass him on the way to the bathroom talk to him. Even if he's sleeping say something.

this will get him use to your presence and your voice.

2. start slow when physically interacting. Put your hand in the cage and let him sniff you- offer a treat from your hand, don't pick him up right away- if he bites you don't yell or jerk your hand away.. just say "Gentle" as you slowly retract your hand.

3. when it comes time to pick them up (usually after a few days of letting them adjust and get use to you), pick him up slowly from an area he is most comfortable. (Mine likes me to pick up up from his petting center rather than reaching into his cage and pulling him out through the door. He must feel more secure.

cup him in both hand securly- but don't squeeze. Get on the floor and hold him close to you so he knows you're not going to drop him, and if you accidentally do- it won't have as far to fall.

if he nips you out of fear the first couple of times, just take a deep breath and resist the urge to drop him.

after a while of taking it slow and getting him to trust you- he'll be like my black bear hammie.

Doki Doki will follow me around the house like a puppy dog when he's in his roll about ball... and if he hears my voice even when sleeping, he'll get excited and run out to greet me.

I've even had him come to me in his roll about ball when I call his name. So he even came to learn his name.

don't worry it will come.

Now... if you have a dwarf hammie like a Russian white or black russian.. that could take a LOT of time.

The males are extremely agressive. I've been attacked by one even though I was just putting his food in his cage way on the other side. He went out of his way to attack.

All the russian breeds I've come across have been pretty nasty. Some are tamable... some males aren't. Its the nature of the breed. But for the ones that can be tamable... it just takes more time than usual, lots of patience, and working on it every day.

Chinese Dwarf Hammies can also be nippy- but only when they're scared or hungry. they're generally very docile.

Winter Whites seem to be the easiest of the dwarfs to train... but I notice they're attracted to shiney things, because they allways nip me accidentally when trying to take off my bracelets or the pink sparkly ring I wear on my middle finger.

just take it slow and give it time. And it will happen.

if things don't improve, you may want to consider taking it to a vet, as he may have some underlying health issues. Sometimes grumpiness can be from not feeling well.

Keep an eye on his tail. Stress can cause a condition known as "wet tail." Its basically diarrhea, which gets caked all over the pootie area and makes the tail look wet. If this ever occurs, go to a vet as it can be deadly in the first 24 hours of symptoms!!! have a bottle of Dritail nearby. Dritail is a weak antibiotic that generally doesn't cure- just helps slow the symptoms. This will be good on say- a weekend when your vet is closed until you can get in to see the vet.

they're also suseptable to overgrown teeth. Make sure they have lots of chew toys and block food to promote good teeth health.

on a side note: Newman seems the perfect name for a grumpy puss. It just seems to fit. Lol.
offer him a treat let him come to you. keep doing this and things should change in time. hamsters are really timid. i have 4 hamsters and when i got them as baby's i just keeped doing the same thing over and now they are really good pets. they never bite.

Hamsters??!?

i have a mean hamster named Newman, how do i get him to be nice
Answers:
i have two little dwarf hamsters and one of them was quite mean when i first got him. what i would do is...
1. hold him every day, hamsters do not stay tame you have to hold them ALOT,
2. be gentile and make shure he sees you before you pick him up, if he bites you then do not jump or drop the poor hamster, just hold him gentely still
3. another way is to put a treat in your hand and wait for him to come to your hand, hunger always over comes fear!
If hes mean...well...shoot. i would thump the little bastard if it bit me and say NO everytime and then maybe he might learn from that?? I'm scared of them...but I like to watch them in their cage run around and play. good luck to ya..and i really do love animals im just scared of hamsters.take care
Some how the hampster has been hurt when someone has picked him up. This is what I do to a mean hamster. I buy a pr of leather gloves. Rub them in his poop to get the scent on them. Pick him up with the gloves and feed him a treat. Do this for a week. After a week take off one glove after picking him up. (make sure you wash your hands well) the scent on your hands could bother him. Feed him a treat with your bear hand.
I hope this works for you.
handle him daily.

if he bites you, don't take him out of the cage, put a glove that he can't bite through on and put your hand in there. pet him or give him treats then take your hand out. do this regularly until he stops trying to bite. once he stops trying to bite you, do the same thing, but without the glove. if you can do this over a period of time without him biting, then you can start taking him out of the cage.
sometimes thats how they are what kind is it? The syrians are easier to handle than the smaller ones. Try getting it an exercise ball to run in, put it near the exit of cage so u don't have to handle it right away. if it dosn't get better get brid of it.
cccccccccoooooooollllll
hold him more...and if that doesnt work thump him on the head
just show a lot of care. NEVER HIT YOUR HAMPSTER. they will be more aggressive. show it love and nurturing every day

Hamsters.?

ok i've had a hamster for about a month now and all I've been feeding him is regular hamster food from the bag. i was wondering if i can give him veggies. like carrots and broccoli?
Answers:
Check out this site for safe foods >> http://www.hamsterific.com/hamsteruniver...
Carrots and Brocoli? I don't think so... why don't give it sunflower seeds?
Give him veggies and fruits. Just give him small amounts and DO NOT give them:high citrus fruits(oranges, lemons, limes)(strawberries and grapes are okay but only in TINY pieces) and DO NOT give them green veggies like lettuce or broccoli. Thats about it for things not to do though. So have fun and play with your hammy alot.

My hamster loves raw steak and cat droppings. As long as I don't mention Richard Gere he gets along with everyone just fine.
yep, they like all kinds of things. Carrots, broccoli, cabbage (NO LETTUCE), apples, banannas, various nuts, grapes, and oddly enough some like meat!
Yes they do like those things. Cut them to pieces they can hold and chew on though. I also used to give mine crackers. The ones without salt. They loved vegetables.
Yes you can feed it veggies.Lettuce is okay in small amounts though it has little nutritional values.Carrots are fine and so is broccoli.Fruits are ok to feed to them as well.Just remember treats are fine just don't over due it and never give them more then they could eat right then.Stored fruits or veggies will rot.Don't give them any manufactured sweets that are meant for humans.Don't feed them Plants that are toxic such as tomato leafs.

Hamsters..?

I have a few questions about hamsters..

What is the life expectancy?

What do they eat?

Are they "easy" pets to care for?

Are they aggressive?

Are they reccommended for small children?

Any additional information would be great

Thanks!
Answers:
Hamsters usually live up to three years with good care.

When feeding your hamster it's best to get a bag of food from the store. The bags usually consist of seeds, dried vegatables and fruit pieces. They have treats with vitamins available for hamsters too. They need about a teaspoon of food when they are small.

They are easy to care for, their cages need to be cleaned once every 5 days or so. Fresh water and fresh water daily is needed.

There are many type of hamsters. Teddy bears seem to be most docile whereas dwarf hamsters have attitudes.

I would say a kid past 8 or so can have a hamster. A hamster as a pet does take time. Watering, feeding and the responsibilty of cleaning the cage should be done by the kid and if they don't have time, are not willing or capable to do this they don't need a pet just yet.

Your local library should have books if you need more information and then again the store where you purchase your hamster should have guideline sheets to help you care for your pet. Google hamsters and you'll get all kinds of information.

Have fun with your new pet. : )
depending on what type of hamster their life expectancy varies...dwarf hamster may only live up to 2 years whereas teddy bear hamster up to 4 years...you can buy them ready prepared hamster food made of various seeds, dry fruits and veggies...but its also important to feed them fresh fruits and veggies for optimal health...stay away from citrus though...they are very easy to care for and prefer to be left alone...they usually sleep during the day and are active at night so if you dont want to be kept away dont keep them in ur bedroom...they are known to bite and will take some time to be tames so dont stick your fingers in the cage at first...just start slowly appraoching the hamster and petting him from up top and once he becomes accustomes to that u can start trying to pick him up...this may take a couple of months...i would not reccomend them for small children unless u make sure that they are tamed first and that your kinds will not want to constantly play with the hamster...you can get them a clear plastic ball for them to run around the house in and i guess the kids could play with them that way...
Hamsters usually live for 2 to 3 years...
They easiest way to feed them is to get a hamster diet from a pet store...it's maily seeds, but they eat many veggies and fruits too...
Agression...they tend to be agressive because they are scared...the bigger the hamster they less aggresive it's going to be...

I wouldnt recomend them for small children, because if sqeezed or frightended they will bite...and it's painfull to adults let alone a small child...

Personally I recommend a rat...they live longer, are easiely tained and are not agressive...

Hamsters live for about 3-5 years, they eat sunflower seeds, vegetables, and bird seed. They are really good pets for beginners, They aren't very aggressive, and I highly recommend them for young and small children. Hamsters also if I remember correctly like to be rubbed with fingernails behind the ears and on the tummy.
The life expectancy for a teddy bear hamster is about 3 years, they are pretty easy to care for [water bottle, food, weekly bedding changes] If kept in pairs they can fight, especially male/male pairs. I think that for a small child (under 8) you may be better off with a rabbit or guinea pig, but if you really want a hamster I would suggest a teddy bear one, not a dwarf hamster (they can be nippy).

I have owned hamsters for years and can help you with any other questions you may have, feel free to email me.

gklevis41@yahoo.com
1.it matters how small it is the smaller the small its life will be, 2.hamster pelets3. yes they are esay, 4.some are and 5. i would say 7+ in age
Syrians: (Teddy Bears,Black Bears) and Dwarfs live around two-four years.

They eat Hamster mix! They like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, carrots, apples, lettuce and they enjoy nibbling on wood, its good for their teeth.

They can nibble, and bite. Even draw blood. Usually when they arn't handled though, and some are just fiesty, but they are loving.

I'd recommend a Teddy Bear Ham for a small child, because thye don't bite as much, and are extrememly cuddly, very cute, soft. And love to be held and played with.

Hamsters are wonderful pets, they need basic care:
Clean Cage,
Room,
Attention,
Love,
Food,
Lots of water.

I have two, and almost all my friends have at least one. Very fun, entertaining. Most bang for the buck!
i had a hamster and there life expectancy is 3 or 4 years i think. they eat carrots (mini) and food you buy at the pet store. they are not aggressive and great with children! they are really sweet but fast so dont let them get loose in the house!
It really depends on what hamster you get. The dwarf hamster is not recommended for children because they often bit. Although the Chinese dwarf hamster is not a biter. They are hard to find and they are FRAGILE. The other type of hamster is they golden or Syrian hamster. They are much more loving and they love to play around with you. They cost around $20(hamster),food 10 dollars, cage 35-100 dollars, bedding 15-30 dollars, cage accessories 50 dollars (toys, house, wheel, water bottle, food bowl). Some people think they are easy to take care of but you need to clean there cage every week, change water bottle every day along with food. Your cage should be away from drafts or direct sunlight. I like ten gallon tanks, but a cage from pet smart will do. Unless you want breeding keep same sex only! Dwarf hamsters can live in pairs, but Syrian hammies can only live alone. Most hamster can live 1.5-3 years if taken care of properly.

HAMSTERs-......?

Any tips are welcome...thinking about getting a hamster but not sure of the kind and sex- also any other tips or links to sites welcome
Answers:
Hamsters are wonderful pets but they are also A LOT of responsibility as much as a dog or cat.

My personal favorite is the long hair teddy bears. their coats are so beautiful.

My hamsters each had their own personalities and quirks which made them wonderful to watch and interact with. But they also do need daily companionship and attention - a lot of attention and freedom. Hamsters are driven to escape their cages and I cannot tell you how many creative ways mine figured out how to get out. So, I always made sure my hamsters did get free time out of their cages for a good amount of time each day.

I get very angry when I see hamsters left in smelly cages all day with no free time or interaction. So be sure before you buy!

good luck!
dont get hamsters
gerbils (2 females or 3 males)
get an aquarium and not a cage.
click link for mor info

good luck
Dwarf hamsters (in my opinion) are te best types to get. They are so much fun to play with. But they pee a lot so you'll have to clean the cage like two or three times a month.
Stay away fromDwarf hamsters they like to live in families and will bite! Had one as a class pet once only to find out later on the real scoop on them.
Teddy bear hamsters are very docile and you'd best stick with males. Make sure you buy from a reputable pet store %26 they don't end up selling you a pregnant female. not fun.
life span 2-3 years. handle gently buy good hamster food and bedding. keep water fres %26 bottle clean clean cage once a week. a wheel is nice..and sometimes noisy but they like it! Hpe the info helps!
you can just email me questions shortgrl099@yahoo.com, i have 7 dwarf hamsters(wich i think are the best kind) and two black bears
Get a syrian any type NO DWARFS!!! They bite and make me cry :,(

get a male they stink less

get aquarians not wire cages (hamms bite the cages and their teeth are pushed into their gums)

get some yogurt bites (my 3 hammies favorites)
You are supposed to clean there cages/aquarium EVERY WEEK!
ur getting a hamster or a ferret. which is it? (ferret!!)
i just got a hamster this past saturday, hes okay, he just doesnt like me petting him. i try to pet him in his cage but he just goes in his wheel. whatever.
Hamsters are fab pets, but choose the breed carefully. The best breed is the syrian, or teddy bear as you guys from america call them ( im in oxford, england)

They are the largest of the breeds making them slower, more placid, and much more laid back, especially the males. The smaller breeds like the russian, or dwarf hamsters are more nippy and fast. They tend to bite alot more.

Me and my husband got our hamster a year ago and he is a great little guy, ( he is a syrian ) He NEVER bites, has his own cute little personality and loves human company.

My advice to you is, bear in mind that although hamsters are small, they need just as much love and care as a dog or a cat. they are prone to infections and diseses easily if you dont clean out their cage propely and can die quickly as a result so really be scrupulous when cleaning out the cage weekly. Also buy the biggest cage you possibily can. Large cage equals a happy hamster. They are fab pets for all ages and have that "cute" factor that keeps you ammused for hours.
I have 8 Dwarf Cambells all are excellent pets and no biters among them. 2 Robo Dwarfs which are non-biters but you cannot handle them because they are just too fast. 2 Syrian Long haired both are very gentle and sweet and love to snuggle. In my opinion the person who owns the hamster determines whether their hamster will be a biter or not. A hamster which is handled gently and calmly will be a non-biter. One which is hand fed no matter the age will also wind up being a non-biter and yes you can turn a biter into a non-biter. Patience and love can turn even the most vicious of hamsters into a non-biter. We adopted one hamster which was maltreated and was a very bad biter and was extremely aggressive and he is calmer and kinder and does not bite.

As for the sex of the hamster that is your own personal choice, males have a scent gland which they rub on everything while females have a scent on them all the time. Neither stink as was suggested by someone else unless you don't let them have a sand bath and don't clean their cages regularly.

There are many sites out there about hamsters but my favorite is hamsterific.com. You can learn a lot about different types of hamsters.

My suggestion to you is to find out as much information regarding the breed of hamster you want and go from there.

If this is your first pet and you want something you will be able to handle easily then I would suggest a Syrian since they are larger and as I call mine 3 toed sloths. :)
get a syrian only one they aren't social, use aspen or super shavins bedding so it dosn't get respiratory disease, do not use an aquarium, get a critter trail at petsmart, aquariums breed bacteria due to no airflow. females is all they sell at petsmart, u can get a handbook there that will tell u all u need to know. I have 3 hamsters all in separate cages, one blackbear, shorthair, longhair. u can get panda bear, honey bear etc pick the one you like and check it out before u buy it, look at ears, should have no white hairs, that indicates age, usually they are 2 months old at petsmart for sale.

Hamsters!! :-)?

i am 12 and i need help!! i want to get a hamster but i'm not sure if my mom will let me. have any persuasive advice?
Answers:
the best advice I can offer is to look responsible to your mom; I think that the best way to do this is to do some research and approach her with the notes you've taken so that she knows you'll know the costs, needs, food, care details of a hamster...I do my research on petco.com
on the bottom left side theres a tab that says Pet care info click on that and that will lead you to a list of different forms of info - I suggest clicking on care info sheets; Its like a handout you can download onto your computer from there just click on hamster and it'll give you all the basic info you need to know to really impress her and educate yourself on how to care for a possible new pet.good luck
ps, it also helps to do good in school and not complain about chores
If you have no other pets you can tell her that you want a pet that is small and will bug the rest of the family as it will live in your room. also that if she gets you one you will keep your grades up.
Bribery?... i mean its always worked for me.
You never know if she will let you till you ask. Maybe offer to do some chores to earn money to buy the hamster yourself.
Do you think you're responsible enough to own and care for a hamster for the entirety of his life? For richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health?? %26 why?

Hamsters in the same cage, is it possible?

I want to put another hamster in the cage with the one i have
the same kind.
I read on a website and it said you cant
but others told me they fight for a day then get along
Answers:
There are certain breeds that will never, ever get along, and certain breeds that will.

You should NEVER put two Syrian hamsters together! They are territorial, to the point of fighting to the death over their territory!

Dwarf hamsters, however, are known for their ability to get along with one another, be it a same sex couple from the same litter or not. Though with ANY animal grouping that hasn't been done before, you need to be there to supervise the entire time -- and you should make SURE they are the same sex, or you'll be having more on your plate than just two fighting hamsters! Dwarf hamsters still have their occasional squabbles, but it will be nothing compared to the dangerous, injury causing, and sometimes fatal fighting that can happen between Syrian hamsters.

So, save yourself heartache and worry, if you have two Syrian hamsters, DON'T put them together. If you have two Dwarf hamsters, feel free to try.

Note: You also CANNOT put a Dwarf with a Syrian. Dwarf hamsters cannot deal well with adjusting to the solitary habits of a Syrian, and may turn out to be the agressor in this situation. Dwarf + Syrian = Bad. Syrian + Syrian = Bad.

Dwarf +_Dwarf = Good!

Common Syrian hamsters: Teddy Bear, Alien, Golden, Fancy, Standard
Well thats kind of touch and go it really depends on the age of the animals. If the one is older then the other then you have a problem. When one is older even by a couple of months then there is sinority there along with strength and wisdom. The younger of the two is in for a fight and possably a really good beating.
if you introduce them properly w/a little family counseling, they;ll adjust to the dysfunction more smoothly

Hamsters in London Flat - good idea or bad?

Are there any general trends you've noticed from Landlords regarding caged pets that I should know about?

Are you a landlord and can tell me something about whether or not someone would be allowed to keep a hamster in a flat?
Answers:
Check with your landlord, but I personally wouldn't have a problem. They're small, quiet, and aren't smelly if you keep the cage clean. Good little pets!
as long as they pay the rent and don't have too many rowdy parties, then who cares. But gerbils might be a different matter...
I see no problem with hamsters! a dog on the other hand.
I dont really care i begged my mum so long she got me 1 even do we aint allowed pets

Hamsters eye sight.?

What colours do they see? How far can they see?
and is their sence of smell good?
Answers:
hamster have notoriously poor vision. Don't know about colors. They have a very good sense of smell and act mostly off of this. This is the need for washing hands prior to handling, they often smell food so bite assuming it is food. As far as distance, well it is not uncommon to see a hamster walk right off the edge of a table due to not seeing it.
they can smell a chicken nugget from a half mile away, upwind. they see all colors and have vision like a hawk. hamsters are natures perfect killing machines.
I know for sure that hamsters have incredibly awful vision, and as a result their hearing and their sense of smell are both very heightened...the reason they have poor eye sight is because they are nocturnal so, like cats, they see better in a dark room with maybe a night light or moon light to guide them...however it really doesn't matter what lighting they are in because they have such excellent senses of smell that they can easily navigate just about anywhere
as far as colors go I'm not sure but I THINK they are color blind like dogs and cats are, hope this helps!
they mostly use their hearing since they can only see about a foot in front of them.
i dont know about the colors and how far they can see, but their eyesight is terrible. their sence of smell is very good.

Hamster!!?

ok so i wrote an essay (edited it and im 10) wrote a shculedule and rote two letters GOOD ones but my mom and dad wont budge they say we have 2 many animals already we only have 2 dogs what do i do ???
Answers:
I think it's good what you did already but they just won't budge, eh? I think you should explain to them that you want to prove that you can be responsible and tell them that you will look after the hamster all by yourself so that they don't worry that they'll end up having to look after it.

Also, make sure that it is what you really want. Are you sure you won't get bored of a hamster or won't have the time to feed it, clean it out..etc.

Good luck, I hope that helped, and if you do get a hamster..have fun with it and choose a cute name lol!
Show them a calander have a specific time set at least 1 week. Make a cage out of a cardboard box. Put specific things into it to represent the real object. Get a rock or stuffed animal and show them every week the progress you have made with it such as washing its cage, taming it, exercise with it, play with it, and if you fail to take care of it you know that they were right and you are not responsible enough. If you do fail try again the next year. Then you might be responsible enough. Your lucky to have dogs. I only have 1 hammie. Her names Apple.
Give up for now and wait a bit of time, after all maybe they think they can't handle any additional pets. Don't push the issue right now and let the hamster idea settle down for several months. I know at 10 how hard it it, I have a daughter that just turned 11 this month. Back when she was 5 she wanted to dye her hair, but I said no at theat time, but if a year from them she could if she wanted to still. Wel a little more then a year later she reminded me of our conversation and I dyed her hair for her. She was a blonde and now has strawberry-blonde hair. Maybe this is the type of agreement to get your parents to do, but have them sign a paper agreeing theat in one year from that day, if you still want a hamster you could have one. My daughter during that year never mentioned about her hair ever, which is what I suggest you do over the next year if they sign a years agreement. Put the paper in your dresser or other very safe location. Put a calender in your room and circle the day a year from now on it, then wait a few days beyond that and ask again, if they say no, pull out the signed paper and remind them of the deal they made with you the year before.

When the time comes, get a male long hair, golden or black Syrian, they have great attitudes and are less likely to nip or bite. Females often are pregnant when bought and have heat cycles that stink every 4-5 days also are more apt to nip or bite.
i wouldnt get too upset over it. after all, when i first asked my parents for mice they said "NO WAY" but then a couple months later, i ended up getting 1 hamster. like other ppl suggested, just make sure u can take care of it and have money and the know-how. and they r fairly easy to take care off. all thats needed is food, water, a clean cage, regular cleaning (and if u want them to get used to being handled) hold them when they r little. if u wait until they r adult hamsters, they will b EXTREMELY hard to hold, bcuz they will bite and b scared. and, despite some ppls' suggestions of "dont leave the food in the cage bcuz they will get fat", leave the food INSIDE the cage at ALL times. once i took the food out, but i forgot to give the hamster food (she didnt die) but when i went to hold her, she bite me. twice. mainly they bite if they:
havent been properly cared for
r hungry
r scared/nervous bcuz of having a new house
but dont, whatever u do, DO NOT beg ur parents, as they will c this as an annoying thing and that will DEFINETLY result in never getting a hamster (or ne other pet). so make sure u have money, time, a good responsible attitude, and then just give ur parents some time. eventually (hopefully) they will allow u to have a hamster. :)

Hamster Vet?

I got a hamster recently and they've been acting very healthy so far. But, I'm scared for their health because my mom won't let me bring them to the vet. What will happen if I don't bring them to the vet? Note that I'm the one who WANTS to take them to the vet and my mom is the one who DOESN'T want to take them to the vet. Also she says that they're like 300-500 dollars an appointment, is that really true because I doubt it.
Answers:
If there is nothing wrong with the hamster than there is no need for a vet visit. Hamsters do not need shots, etc. If an emergency does pop up then it will need a vet visit.

300-500 dollars is a bit over exagerated. For a routine visit for something simple it is around 100-150, and even that is a lot. I have taken many rats to the vet, and the average cost is about $75. Where I live the average visit is around 45-55 dollars to start(that is just to examine) and then any medications(around 15-25 each), and waste disposal($1.00)

This is not saying I have not paid my fair share of large bills, surgeries will cost more, I paid $1200 dollars of a leg amputation, all pre and post care included.

Unless it is something serious; tumors, serious injuries requiring surgery, etc the cost is usually reasonable and most vet understand that children are limited on money and may do payment plans.
if your hamster is acting healthy... then he doesnt have to see a vet. Yeah, vets are really expensive... it's more expensive than humans going to a doctor lol
Um... No!!! I am from England and it casts about 拢15 here for a consultation at the vets, which I guess is about $28 to you. So your mum is telling you a porkie. If you had a dog and he broke his leg, amd needed an operation, and a stay at the vets it would be to that ammount, But your little hammie wont break the bank!

That said, your mum's attitude is alarming, in the fact she allowed you to take on the responsibility of a pet, but not the responsibility of its health and welbeing. Im married, and unfortunatly we could not get a rescue cat where we are living right now, but brought our gorgeous fat furball Hamster, Harry a year ago. And of course, even as a married couple, you have to take into account the cost of the pet, and wether we could afford a vet bill should anything happen. You need to ask your mum why she lied and why she is not willing to take your pets health into account.
If the hamster is healthy he doesn't need to see a vet, so don't worry too much right now.

However, if the hamster gets sick or suffers an injury then it most certainly does need to see a vet whatever your mother says and whatever it costs. If she refuses to take it to a vet that qualifies as animal cruelty. Anyone who takes on a pet takes responsibility for its wellbeing, including any trips to the vet that might be required. If your mother agreed to let you have a hamster then she should let you take it to the vet if it is necessary.

Many hamsters can live a long helthy life without ever visiting a vet, so don't worry too much unless it gets sick or injured.
they don't need to go to a vet unless they get sick, but by then its usually too late anyway. wet tail is the main thing u need to watch for, stinky butt, poop and wet on butt. my died at 7 mos from it, never showed any sign of illness til then and died basically in 36 hrs. at the vets, usually a check up is 65 dollars, tests can run it up to 300+ she died 2 hrs after she got to the vet and i stll had a $140 vet bill.
Your mother is wrong. She should never have gotten you a pet if she wouldn't take it to the vet. And no a vet will not cost you 300-500 dollars that is for a dog with serious health issues not a hamster.

My hamster recently got sick with aspiragyllis fungus from Corn Cob bedding (Do Not use this bedding it says its safe but manufacturor says they knew things like this could happen) and the vet bill for a sick hamster was 55 dollars including medicine for it.

If your hamster is acting healthy that means it is healthy and does not need to see a vet. If it starts acting sick then you will need to take it to a vet. Ask your dad if your mom says no and if he says no then ask your grandma and everyone you can think of to help you get the poor defenseless creature to the vet. Your mother thinks less of it because it is a rodent to her but she needs to realize that it is a living breathing thing and needs the same care and consideration we give to our own children. Would she not take you to the doctor if you were sick? Use that against her. It may work. :)
First of all your hamster is fine! If it is healthy, I wouldn't worry!
Hamsters don't need check-ups, so I wouldn't worry about the vets fees!
I live in England, so I wouldn't know how much it costs in America.Over here it only costs around 拢15.
I really wouldn't worry about your hamster!
if it's healty there is no need to bring your hamster to a vet I think.... yes rather expensive I think
Well my answer to you is that I don't know if a hamster really goes to the vet or not.
Honestly, honey, your mom is full of crap and just doesn't want to have to pay a vet bill for something that she thinks probably won't ever get sick. Hamsters are just like any other pet and need to have regular check-ups to assure that everything is going good with them. I've NEVER heard of a vet charging $300-$500 for a simple check-up! The ones around here only charge $25 for a check-up and they take every kind of pet imaginable. Your mom is just being ridiculous and isn't teaching you very good responsibility. If you have to, assure her that you'll pay for the check-up personally (if you can). But, I'd advise you to do some thorough research on the vets in your area and find out which pets that they CAN treat and which that they can't. Also, be sure to make sure that their prices are reasonable. A simple phone call can tell you all of that or you can drive by their office and check for yourself. Always remember, pets are people too! They need check-ups just like humans! Good luck!
she probly doesn't see the need to take it
No, our vet is only $60 to bring our guinea pigs.
I would wait untill you see REAL signs of illness. And yes hamsters do cost A LOT!!!

Hamster Stories?

All we see on the pets question page are questions on hamsters that bite and are aggresive, do any of you own a cute, lovable, social hamster?

We have had our male syrian hamster for exactly a year now, and me and my husband adore him. He is a bit of a rascal, he has chewed his way through my sofa and my husbands 拢130 pair of jeans LOL! and escaped for 10 days on a big adventur e ( not so funny!) But he is a cute fat furball who never bites, loves to come out and play and likes gentle little kisses. I would love to hear your funny stories of hamsters.
Answers:
i have three good syrians, they love to escape, locks on their doors, they love to run in their plastic balls. and walk on the bed
I remember this one time when I wanted to get a hamster but my mom wouldn't let me. I talked my older brother into going to the pet shop and getting one. I get it and had it under my bed for a long time (once in the while he'd be chewing on something and my mom would come in and say "what was that?" I had to think of some kinda excuse and it worked!) Later on though winter was comming and it was like really cold in my room because it was on the far end of the house (not only that the pure little guy was under my bed!) School was going on and i hardly had time to take car of him anymore, and he got really ill and sick the next time i seen him. I though for sure he was gonna die, but I put him in the oven on a piece of wood and warmed him up a little. He was so hungry too and didn't have food to give him so gave him some baby food (squash flavored!) and right away he grow back his strength. I though for sure that poor little guy was going to die. It was soo weird he made it through all that.

Hamster Report?

Don't tell me everything that can make up a report because that's considered cheating, but can you guys tell me the History of Dwarf Hamsters? (This is a school thing and I'm using it to persuade my parents to get one)

Hamster Question?

Why does around my hamsters bottom smell horrible???Help i never want to play with her cause she smells really gross. And she is about 6-8 months old.
Answers:
She might have sat in diarrhea poops and they got on her butt and they smell bad. Try taking her to the vet to clean her bottom out. She might have diarrhea that makes it smell bad or some kind of infection. Please take your hammy to the vet.

Best of luck,
Sunshine G. :o)
Give her a wheel to run. She need exercises.
Clean her butt for her a little? Might be just some left over poop. If it doesn't work you should take her to the vet to be sure, in case it's some kinda illness. And if your vet says there's nothing wrong with your hamster, maybe you should try getting used to the smell, or you're overreacting.

good luck
Have you heard of wet tail?

Does your hamster's tail end look discoloured or damp at all? Is he passing normal pellets?

You should know that if your hamster is showing signs of diarrhoea ('wet tail') - and I can't think of any other reason a hamster's bottom would smell - you need to get him to the vet fast. Diarrhoea kills rodents quickly because their bodies cannot handle the ensuing dehydration.

Chalice
Wow i have never heard of a hamster having a smelly bottom, so the only thing i could imagine is wrong is that she has an infection, or a disese called wet tail, so check her bottom to see if she is suffering with an upset belly. Wet tail is fatal in hamsters, so it would be best to get her to the vet for a check up.
Take your hamster to the vet. Odds are you haven't been cleaning the cage properly and she has now developed Wet Tail or a fungal infection. Hamsters are not supposed to smell bad. If you do not do a proper cleaning of your hamsters cage food will rot and the hamster will get sick.

Hamster question?

My daughters hamster(alex)got his head stuck between the bars on its hamster cage and either choked or broke its neck, the guy at the pet shop said he never heard of such a thing happening(he carries the same exact cage in his store),my question is,has this happend to anyone here before or did i just have a retarded hamster
Answers:
I have never had this happen to me either- but those I have seen it happened to, have had faulty or defective cages.

can you please give us more info on the cage? Like the brand and make? the size of the distance between bars... was it a hamster cage or was it a cage you were using as a hamster cage? was it one you had to set up yourself?

If it were a hamster cage- most bars are made for making sure even dwarfies can't escape.

I'm very sorry this happened to your daughter. it must be devestating.

I would go directly to a pet smart or a petco (or whatever pet store sells that cage). they have 1800 numbers to the manufacturers (A lot of the times, companies are no longer putting those on the boxes or on their websites.)

call them directly and tell them what happened.

If this was a hamster cage, that shouldn't have happened unless there was something defective... or something just wasn't snapped in there all the way. but even then... it sounds more like a defect.
Contact the company that made the cage and request some compensation. This could be a potential lawsuit.
It's never happened to me but I prefer plastic cages as I've known many hamsters who squeeze in between the bars. The bars were obviously not close enough together and if I were you I would write or e-mail the company who made it and complain or at least notify them of the danger. I would also critique it at the websites for petmart and petco to stop this from happening in the future to someone else's pet.

Hamster question ?

We bought a male hamster 10 weeks ago. He was 6 weeks old when we got him. We have read all the books ,followed all the advice.
He is a really nice character, does not bite and is now quite tame although lively.
He eats fine, his stools are normal, firm. He seems very happy and contended. He comes out of his sleeping box and comes to us at the bars of his cage.
I am concerned because each night when he comes out he is discoloured around his tail.
I have read about WET TAIL,I do not think this is wet tail because it started several weeks ago yet he seems happy and very healthy.
I wash him with a damp cloth and he plays in his ball and the discolouration dries and disappears, but it is there each day when he gets out of his bed at night. his bedding is fresh each day.
He is silver in colour but is getting to look tan around his tail.
If this is not wet tail what is it?. If it is wet tail why is he so well ,eating drinking, full of life. He looks extremely fit.
Any ideas? thanks
Answers:
well, if it was wet tail I'd say feed him some cabbage
since it doesn't sound like wet tail then it's probably just urine that is discoloring his fur; you sound like a great hammie owner, you researched your pet and follow all proven methods to insure is best care, and for that you should be proud of yourself.for that same token you need to realize the more invested in your pet you are the more likely you are to freak out about every little sneeze and every time he sleeps in an extra five minutes! Don't get me wrong, it's good - cross that - great that you care so much for your hammie but I'm just letting you know, concern is a good thing it prevents alot of bad things however too much concern can lead to too much stress for you-take a chill, hon, you're doing GREAT and your hammie is healthy and happy so relax and enjoy each others company
ps, you should probably feed him the cabbage anyway-they love cabbage and it's healthy for them (if he doesn't have wet tail-it will prevent wet tail, and if he does have wet tail-cabbage can make him better; just feed him a couple of pieces about the size of a quarter every day and don't worry if he doesn't eat all of it-fresh cabbage is best, buy a head of it at the grocery store)
It certainly sounds like wet tail, but you're right in thinking he should be getting more poorly. I' d take him to the vet anyway, as wet tail is fatal and if it's not that, I don't know what it is but a vet might!
It's probably just his scent glands ...nothing to worry about !
even though your hamster is eating and drinking and grooming, is he losing weight? my hamster was like that, he lost so much weight that you could feel his spine by just lightly touching him. a few weeks later, he got the wet tail. he wouldn't eat, groom, or drink. he just kept sleeping. so if your hamster does that, bring it to the vet as soon as you can, or if you can't, you can go to petsmart, and get this thing called "wet tail oasis plus" something like that. i heard it works. as long as your hamster are eating, drinking, and grooming, there shouldn't be anything to be worried about.
if the betting is colored that could be it
take him to vet anyway and have it checked out.
Male hamsters tend to be very lazy compared to the females, i have this with my male hamster and all i can suggest is that he pee's himself mine does this and smells ofeten too, if it was wet tail he would be very very poorley by now, if you are concerned then do take him to the vets but do think it is just what my hamster does.

shelley x x x
hi i have had many hampsters if u dont think it it wet tail which is very deadly to hammy then it could be his gland patches cuming up hammys have glads to sent mark every thing in his cage to warn off other hammys any more questions email kerryanimal@yahoo.co.uk

Hamster problem?

i have two baby hamsters and i give them their food, but the only thing that they like to eat are sunflower seeds. so, should i only give them the sunflower seeds or just give them all their food, because i don't think they eat the other food. please answer fast!!!
Answers:
Hamsters need a little more variety than that. Give them everything in the mix, and eventually they will start eating other items. Also, you can give them carrot pieces, lettuce scraps, small pieces of apple and even unsalted crackers.
yea give them sunflower seeds cuz my hamster only eats thoses 2
Give them all of the food. If they get too hungry they have an option to eat that way.
give them a variety but also a seperate bowl of seeds.
all of there food not just sunflower seeds

sunflower seeds are real fatning and are not as good for your hammys then all of it
Just give them all the food. Those seeds may be their favorite, but they will eat some of the rest as well.

You can also occasionally give them a little fruit (like apples or pears) and carrots as treats. No more than 1 or 2 baby carrots or 1 or 2 slices of fruit.
I have a Teddy Bear Hamster (Molly 4years old) and she loves, carrots, lettuce, apples, zuccini and nectarines along with the dry food.
It's better to give them a variety of food.
Give them the whole mixture. As they grow, they might develop a taste for the other seeds. Don't forget to give them small amounts of fresh veggies and friut.

When they are a little older, hamsters also love yogurt and raw hamburger meat. But don't put these in their cage. Take them out, and feed them a little yogurt off a spoon or give a little piece of raw meat. You don't want them storing stuff like that in their cage as it will rot and stink. Just let them have whatever they will eat right then and there.

Yes, that stuff is very good for them. Wild hamsters, (yes, they are wild, from Africa), are insect and veggie eaters. That's why a little raw meat here and there won't hurt them. (It says so in my "how to care for a hamster" book).
can someone answer my fancy mouse question. the one about the cages?
give them their regular food mix, and carrots, strawberrys, celery, apple slices, cheerios, dry spaghetti, small amount of raw ground beef, toast soaked in milk, remove when they are done to avoid spoiling, and try veggies always wash off first.
NO in fact start to take away their sunflower seeds. When a hamster exists only on sunflower seeds their teeth weaken and the chance of teeth problems is greater. Give them Tofu and Broccolli which will help their teeth. Also give them their hamster food but limit their treats such as yogurt drops and sunflower seeds.

All hamsters love: sunflower, pumpkin and nuts. However these are all to be limited. Give your hamsters their feed and limit all excess treats.

Never give a dwarf hamster Carrots or Lettuce. Carrots contain too much sugar and will increase the risk of Diabetes, Lettuce contains Laudanaum and should not be fed to any small animal.

Oh and odds are they are eating the other foods but stash their sunflowers very fast.

Hamster okay?

When I put my hamster in one of my draws, and leave it pulled out so he can run around when i go to get food, he does this weird thing where he keeps scratching at the bottom of the draw then he does like a back foot push out thing, and then keeps repeating, anyone know? hes a dwarf hamy
Answers:
He's probably trying to dig. Wild hamsters live underground and dig daily, domesticated hamsters also love to dig and will try to dig in corners.
one of my friends hamsters does sumthing like what u were describing. ive always thought it was just him playing around, but i guess i could be wrong...
There's nothing wrong with him, he just doesn't like being put in there. Every hamster I've ever bought has done that to the box I've brought them home in. He just wants out.
It sounds like he's trying to dig. Think about the same movements if he were in shavings or loose soil. It doesn't necessarily mean he hates it in there. He might just be trying to explore.
He is trying to escape. They try to dig there way out of places.
it sounds like he doesnt realize he isnt digging and so he pushes the extra dirt away with his back foot. If he were in dirt he probably would be digging really well.
Your dwarf hamster is digging. Hamsters are rodents and in the wild live underground. They did burrows and live in them.
It is not something to worry about. He may smell dust in the drawer and is digging instinctively.

Hamster needs attention---not ready to give up on my man?

My fiaoncee has always loved having hamsters as pets, to this day...he does well with the dog and the cat, and although he never wanted to clean the fish bowl by himself, he always cleaned it when I helped him and he never failed to feed them...so I didn't think twice when he asked for a hamster-in fact we both got one, mine is thriving however he never plays with his. I have to remind him to feed it and he only cleans it's cage when I am cleaning my hammie's cage and offer to help him with his...as a result of this his hamster is fat from lack of exercise, and his hammie used to, from day one, run into our hands whether or not we had a treat because he liked being held now he is so neglected he hides from us where we can't reach him-he's scared of us...I told him if he doesn't take an interest then I'll rehabilitate the hamster myself and then put him up for adoption...soon I'll be moving out the cat and my hammie are coming with me
What should i do about him and his; I'm not sure
Answers:
I think you know the answer. Whatever you do, do NOT leave this poor little guy in the hands of someone who's proven he won't take care of him. Rehabilitate the little guy yourself and then either keep him or find a good home for him.

Is there any way that the hamsters can live together in the same cage? Most animals are happier with company.

Good luck.
Why are you moving out if hes your fiancee?

Start playing with him now, if you guys got married the pets would belong to you both equally with equal responsibilty.

Keep the ham as a parting gift. With a little effort he will come around. Put the cages near one another so they can interract and make him get in the wheel and the little ball thingy.
If he is not willing to take care of his pet, then you should take care of this animal in the meantime until you can find it a better home, if you don't want to keep it.

It's obvious he's not good with this kind of responsibility (whether intentional or unintentional), but there is no reason why the hamster should be uncared for. Play with the little guy, and offer to take him with you when you leave.

You should really have a sit-down with your fiance` and explain to him exactly how you feel, and try to find out if he really wants this animal or not.

Definitely handle the animal more, since it seems like the lack of socialization is affecting it's behavior as well.
tell him u won't play with his hamster unless he plays with his. sometimmes u gotta be cruel to be kind. haha.

well anyway on a more serious note yes I would try that but, if he's truely completely careless i would put some ads up on hoobly.com or some place local and try to find the right person or family for the little guy. Hamsters make great pets for children or anybody really. : )

Hamster Help!?

Hi, I just got a hamster from my cousin. She's a dwarf hamster and she is extreamly fat. I don't know why, but she eats and eats and eats and eats, she almost lookes pregnant and she is like nesting in the corner of her cage. I don't think that she is pregnant, but my cousins sister has a male hamster. I don;t think they ever put them together. Well, I really need some help, I don't want my baby to eat herself to death!
Answers:
Does your new hamster have a wheel to run on? That may help her get into shape and lose some weight. What kind of food are you feeding her? If it contains sunflower seeds they tend to make rodents gain a lot of weight. I don't think that your hamster is pregnant my hamsters make nest like beds and one is a male. So don't worry. Lastly try to limit the amount of food/treat that you're giving her. Possibly give her some fresh fruits and veggies, not a lot but it's good for them in small amounts. GOOD LUCK!
Best call would probably be to take it to the vet or at least call a vet nearby and ask them over the phone and see what they think. I had a hamster but it spend most of its time running around in the cage, eating and sleeping and it was never a fat one. My call would be to call the vet and ask?
She is probably pregnant. That's why she might be eating a lot. She needs LOTS of protein. Don't handle her, just leave her to do her job. P.S. all hammies make a nest even if their not pregnant.
Hello,
First off, I have had Russian Dwarf hamsters and I know they love to eat. But don't let her fool you, she is not as big as she looks. They like to store the food in their cheeks and their cheeks run almost half the lenght of their bodies. They are like chipmunks in that way. In the wild, food might not always be around and so when they find it, they stuff it in their cheeks and will hide in somewhere so they have it for later. If you just got her, she might not feel comfortable enough to hide her food yet and that's why she is carrying it around with her all of the time.

It's always possible that if she was in the same cage with the male that she could be pregnant. You will need to check with your cousin to make sure of that. I had two Russian dwarves who were babies when I got them and unfortunately, they had babies. Just make sure if she does have babies not to put the male in with her. The male ate one of the babies and it was the most horrific thing I have ever seen.
I would ask your cousin if the two hamsters were ever in the same cage. She could be pregnant, although hamsters build nests with tissue or papertowel cardboard tubes. It is possible she is justing making a comfortable, private place for herself. If she is fat, I would suspect she may be pregnant. None of my hamsters every ate so much they got fat. They will stuff their cheeks with food and stash it...be sure she is eating all that you think. She may be storing it in her cheeks.
If you can hold her and most of the weight is her back end, she may be pregnant.
I also would consider another female companion, dwarf hamsters like company.
if shes pulling out her furr and making a nest shes definitley pregnant unless she doesnt have bedding in her cage well try not giving her so much food you never know maybe she isnt a dwarf after all
pregnant! ask your cousin if she wants the babies, becus your description is telling everything that a pregnant hamster does so good luck!!!
I would maybe make a call to the vet. My hamster however is male and almost always builds a nest in the corner of her cage. and my hamster is also really fat, could just have something to do with fat hamsters liking to make corner nest in their cage. lol. About her weight, I would add a exercice ball if you dont already have one, and put her in a hamster ball once a day or so and so. I would cut back on the food a little, do not refill the dish if its empty because many hamster move their hamster food to a different location in their cage, so make sure she is actually eating it first but still cut down a little on the food, she should get better.
If she is pregnant you would definately know as she would give birth very soon - as dwarf hamsters pregnancy last for 18 days only and only in the last few day the female gets very fat! But she gets fat at the bottom part of her body and not in all her body! So I think that she is only fat - my male dwarf hamster is fat too and eats a lot too - so I think that yours is only fat (if all her body is fat and not only the bottom part) - Just give her a wheel to exercise on to - Good luck!

Hamster Help!?

My hamster keeps throwing up!
Is this normal?
Answers:
Are you sure you aren't seeing the hamster emptying food and other items out of its cheek pouches? Hamsters, as rodents, are incapable of throwing up. This is why rat poison works so well on them. Once they ingest it, there is no possible way for them to get it out of their system. It's also why you don't need to fast a rodent before surgery - even if the anesthesia makes them naseuous, they can't vomit and aspirate themselves. I would guess you are seeing your hamster removing food from it's cheek pouches, and this is nothing to worry about. If you are worried there is something wrong with your hamster, take it to a veterinarian.
Absolutely NOT!
I have 15 Dwarf hamsters. Sometimes it looks like they are throwing up but it is just food that they have kept stored in their cheeks. The food is always dry and it looks like it just came out of the food bowl. They often do this when I first pick one up. If it something more I would suggest a vet. Good luck
no this is not normal

when you say he is throwing up is he actually sick wet sick

or is it dry food,

you do know hamsters pouch food dont you

if he is being sick you must take him to the vets with some of the sick, the vet will need to see what he is bringing up

Hamster Help! Need Now!!?

My hamster some how keeps getting out of his cage and right now he is out somewhere,
1.He Is in our basement and has no way of getting upstairs.
2.I have no clue as to what kind of hamster he is.
3.He is big and black

I need knowledge as to what i can use as bait to attract him.
I need it to attract him to the bait and must be able to get his attention from up to at least 30-40 ft i would have to say.
So if anybody knows of a good bait to attract hamsters please tell me.
Answers:
Ah! I too had this problem. My hamster had a particular liking for " Terra" brand chips. You should try any sort of potato chip. I waited for him to come out and placed a t-shirt on top of him once he did to stop him from getting away. Since you don't know where you're little critter is, just wait. If this doesn't catch him, you can "trap" him using a ramp and bucket or bucket-like container. Put some food in a clean, hamster-escape-proof container, and leave a book or board up into the bucket. He will climb up the ramp, go in the bukcet, and not be able to get out. Good luck!

If he still won't come out or if your basement has lots of hiding places, message me for more ideas.
I sense you are looking for the master bait.
Fresh veggies or carmel popcorn are both good.
Cheese!!! Good luck catching him! Sit still and set the cheese out in a few places. Be very quiet and watch for him, he'll come out soon!
Usually, when my hamsters get loose. Bait doesn't help. It never has for me, anyway. Wait until it is dark out, and i guess if your focused on using bait. Lay it somewhere along a wall, and just wait until they are active at around nine pm. Just look in all your rooms where he%26#92;she can access. He'll pop up soon. He'll get bored, and lonesome.
use a live mouse trap with food. if you dont get the hamster, youll at least get rid of some rodents. when it dies, if you dont catch it fast enough, it will give off a smell so that you know. use his favorite food, sunflower seeds, yogurt bites. dont make him climb stairs. if he falls, he will get hurt.
Bait for hamsters?
Well, my hamster used to love these treats from the pet store: I think they were little balls made of honey or peanut butter or something and they were covered in sesame seeds. You could try some of those.

Hamster health?

i have a pet hamster and i read that both cedar and yellow pine shavings are hazardous to your pet's health. what wood shavings should i use? i am in an area where basically just pine and cedar are available.
thank you for answering this question
Answers:
There are debates about the use of pine. Some say it must be kiln dried to burn off the fumes. However there isn't any scientific or anecdotal evidence that pine is bad. Some animals are allergic to it but not all. Cedar is also supposed to be OK but in the small confined spaces most pocket pets are kept their owners worry about the concentration of fumes. Most won't use cedar. I've used pine mixed with aspen in pup tanks with no ill affects. I also like to use hay. The animals love to eat it and nest in it. I like the fragrance and deodorizing affect.
i had a hampster
Check your local pet store for ''Carefresh'' or corn cob bedding. Those are the healthier options.

I use corn cob with my rats. It works better than any wood shavings I've used.

You can also look into ''Feline Pine'' cat litter, or bird bedding, if you cannot find bedding for small animals, other than the wood shavings.
When I bought my Chinese Dwarf Hamster, I think they told me to buy Aspen wood shavings.(I know you said that only Pine and Cedar are avaliable)..I think they said never to get pine. I don't know why, though...
Kiln-dried pine is fine. I've raised all kinds of rodents from mice to rabbits and never had a problem with upper respiratory problems in any of them using the pine. I get mine from Agway and I currently use it for my guinea pigs. If there is an Agway near you, I'd recommend it. The carefresh and other recycled bedding is fine for them healthwise but it gets very expensive.
I used cedar shavings and my hamster lived for three years with no problems.
ya i heared that to but i use pine and my hamsters are as healthy and old as ever :)
I use Carefresh for my hamster and he loves it! It comes in many different colors. If they don't have it near you, you can always order it online.

Hamster has scabs?

hello, i just bought a hamster from the pet store, but he has these things under his fur that feel like scabs. should i be worried?
Answers:
If your hamster was housed with other hamsters then it probably is scabs.

Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and will fight with every other hamster in their cage (many times until death) once they reach sexual maturity. Dwarf hamsters, while they can live in groups, will fight as well. Since I've yet to see a pet store that has their hamsters housed properly, I'm sure this is what has occurred with your hamster.

Watch your hamster, if the scabs haven't gone away or improved in another week, then I'd contact a vet. It could be mites but every mite infested hamster I've seen doesn't have scabs and you can't feel the mites. Hamsters don't usually have a problem with fleas either.

fleas or mits see ur vet
go see your local vet that looks at small animals it either has flees or mites and if they do not get treated they will lose there fur thats what happend to mine she had mites lost ehr haid and the mites casued her to get cancer and die so i sugest you get her into see a vet asap

Hamster has a large growth?

My hamster has a large growth in front of one of his back legs. Its been growing slowly over the last few months, and i can't figure out what it is. it's now starting to get slightly raw, as it now rubs when he walks.
He's now starting to eat and drink less.
He belongs to my cousins, who are 4 and 7, so i'd rather not put him to sleep, but i dont want him to suffer either. Does anyone have any ideas to help him with this issue?
Answers:
I don't know how to tell you this but your hamster more then likely has cancer. That lump is a tumor. I would suggest putting it down. Its one of the hardest things to do as a pet owner but it also good for young children to understand that death is a part of life. A little more then a year ago i ha to take my dog to the vet because he was suffering and in pain. Its hard for me to picture my dog in his happier day's because I waited so long.
My hamster had this also and it eventually died. I found out it was a tumor. I know it will be painfull and sad but for the hamsters sack please don't let it suffer anymore.
My boys where 4 and 7 also when their hamster passed away. They cried , and yelled at me because I couldn't do anything for their hamster but I explained to them loved ones pass away and have no more pain.
We buried our hamster in the yard so they can talk to him anytime they want to and it helped.
sweetie its a tumor, hammies get those sometimes, you didn't say how old it is but syrians live 2-4 yrs, and usually at the ending stages they have this. Please have a vet put her down before she suffers too much, and maybe get a new one to help u get over the loss.
Yes, it is most likely a tumor, although this doesn't necessarily mean your hamster has cancer. A majority of tumors in hamsters are benign (non cancerous), yet can grow so large they begin to cause severe discomfort to the animal. If the tumor was malignant (cancerous) the hamster would usually have other symptoms, such as hair loss, hormonal imbalances, or the presence of other tumors.

Removal of the tumor by surgery is always a possibility but can be difficult if the tumor has latched onto blood vessels or muscles in the hamsters leg.

Sometimes, the best idea is to just make sure the hamster is comfortable until you think its in pain or the tumor is interfering with the quality of its life.

In your situation, you might want to talk to your cousins parents and discus the possibly of euthanasia, especially if the tumor is turning raw.

Hamster feeding?

how much food do I feed dwarf hamster i don't want to over feed it?
Answers:
Fill the little bowl...

And make sure to put a sprinkle of new each day they like to
have a fresh source of food.. they will pack away their favs in their lairs.. =)

If you feed them fruit Apple is always a good bet.. Makes sure to only give them no more than 1 tsp and remove what they dont eat from the cage. They will store what they can't eat and it could rot, or worse ferment and fremented fruit can cause them gas which is VERY bad since they dont fart or burp...
hampsters will hide thier food, and will not overeat, you should give it freewill and make sure there is always food available in the cage.
just put the food in a small bowl. u wont over feed it, cuz hamsters dont eat if they r full. i had a hamster for two years. actually it never over ate food no matter how full the bowl is. so it shouldnt be any problem.
a small bowel of food a day, you can also feed it fruit and veggies. look up on google what other foods your hammy can eat.

Hamster broken legs?

my hamster's two back legs broke. he escaped and got into another hamster's cage overnight and broke them in the fight. does anybody know a good vet in middletown, new jersey, or how i can fix it myself?
Answers:
Middletown animal hospital is very good- try going there!
sorry I dont live there to tell you what vet is good and whats not but there is nothing you can do to fix it yourself so look in the phone book for vets around you and call and find out.
Because I do not live in New Jersey, I do not know the best vet. I bet if you do a little research online, you can get it. Just search on yahoo. If anything, I think you should take your hamster to a vet hospital. Best of luck!
Get a very small cardboard box. Put some nice comfy towels at the bottom. Have his usual living neccesities by him (RIGHT by him) and a nice igloo. Get a toothpick and some medical tape. Place the toothpick on his leg but so that the top spike is a little hight then his back (this will give him proper support). Bind the tape around the toothpick firmly, but so that blood will still have access. Plus, are his legs cold? If so, he has no blood in there and you have to stick them in some nice warm water to get circulation running in and out again. Massage his little legs if they are cold, too, because this will have a good effect. Have a hot water bottle in his cage and keep it warm ALL the time. With his homemade splint, take off the medical tape once a day and change it. Even though this procedure is usually effective, go to a vet quickly. It doesn't matter if it is a good vetrinarian office or not. Just get him to the emergency place and have them treat him. Good Luck!
how did he get into the other cage???
Contact Dr. Goode. Not sure how close the vet is to you but they are the best.

You cannot fix them yourself. And odds are they won't wrap them unless they are correctable. They may have to put him down.

Hamster Biting- how to get her to stop?

My Hamster is biting. I got her on the 6th %26 I just started holding her yesterday.Only cause the pet store told me to wait a week to hold her to get her use to the envirment shes in.But I couldn't wait a week shes too cute :-) Anyway, she keeps biting me or it could be nibbiling whichever.Im just wondering how I get her to stop biting me? She doesn't seem to bite my husband %26 everytime I hold her she seems towant to bite me? I don't know if its because of the stuff I have on my hands( I think its Eczemia) or she just don't like me
Answers:
Hamster biting was the number one reason people returned them when I worked at a pet store. The biggest thing to remember is that hamsters have very poor vision and therefore act mostly on smell. Keeping this in mind be sure to wash your hands immediately before handling her so that your hands don't smell like food, may help to avoid fruit flavored soap as well. Other things that help are providing more hiding spaces in the cage to increase the comfort level, attract her attention and then take her out rather then just removing her from her nest.

Good luck!
Try this:
http://www.celiahaddon.co.uk/pet%20probl...
B ite it back
Stop holding her and she won't bite you!
hold her more often til she is used to you handling her
My hamster favoured my husband over me at the begining, cheeky rascal, but he has never bitten in the whole year we've had him!

The good news is, she is tame with your hubby (GRRR!!) so all you need to do is bribe her! oh yes, the way to a hamsters heart is well and truly through there stomach. Once my little harry realised I was the one feeding him and cleaning him every week he soon changed his mind on who he loved the most ( he chewed a hole through my husbands 拢130 French connection jeans this week!!! )

Let her feed from your hand every day. They adore yogurt drops, brocolli, bananas, cucumber and mushrooms so use these to get her used to your hand and also your scent, as you have to remember hamsters are actually partially blind, so they respond to sound and smell. Also talk to her alll the time. Its strange, but hamsters respond to their name being said and hearing your voice. I promise she will be your best friend in no time! good luck!
What type of hamster is it? If it is a Syrian they usually do not bite. If it is a Dwarf they are very territorial and more aggressive. However any hamster will bite if frightened, startled or smells something they want to eat. Do you have hand cream on? If you do wash your hands completely before handling your hamster and see if that changes. If it doesn't then I suggest taking a small piece of Tofu and hand feeding her the Tofu. She will forget about biting you and start to associate you with the Tofu. Don't let your husband give her Tofu.

If your hamster is a Dwarf DO NOT GIVE: Carrots, yogurt drops, hamster honey treats, raisins. The sugar content of these items is way too high and Dwarf Hamsters especially are more at risk of Diabetes. Syrian Hamsters also run the risk of developing so if you really want to give treats give them Tofu, Broccolli, Sunflower seeds (in moderation does not allow calcium to absorb in their bodies and makes their teeth weaker.) Pumpkin seeds.

Hamster behind is blaoted, around twice its size!!! help!!!?

HELP
Answers:
How can I break this to you gentley.. Have a feeling you have a male hamster and the bloated behind are his testicals!!!

Alarming is'nt it? They have balls to be proud of, and are a hell of a size. If your hamster is new and fairly young, you will notice in the next few weeks that they will actually hang out of his body. This will normally occur when asleep, just woken up, warm or relaxed.

I have had my male hamster a year and his "bloated" behind is a favourite topic when we have visitors, my husband is very proud we have a stud for a hamster! Its normal, but scary looking at first!
IT"S OK! it's mozt likely just a male or is there any other symtoms???
Your hamster is probably a male. Males have testicles which hang out behind the hamster.

If your hamster is seeming to be lay around more it could be due to heat. Make sure that his bedding is fresh and that he has toilet paper to sleep in. This is a bit cooler for them. Also take any wood based bedding out of his cage and switch him to paper bedding. This is safer and better for your hamster.

But as always when in doubt take your pet to the vet.
sounds like a male hammie, they have big u know whats,

Hamster beddings?

I was just wondering if I could use hay as beddings for my hamsters??
Answers:
To whomever suggested Pine: Please take a moment to do a little more research on Pine Bedding and how utterly horrible it is for your hamsters.

These are very bad for your hamster and other pets. The aromatic hydrocarbons produced from softwood beddings can cause both respiratory and liver damage in rabbits and other small animals. If it can cause such illness in RABBITS, imagine what it's like on the tiny lungs of a HAMSTER!

There are several alternatives to bedding, from hay, to recyled paper, to toilet paper. Just roam around a bit at your local pet store and you should be able to find plenty of other alternatives. :)
I tear up strip of tissue for mine and he loves it. It only takes a couple - just rip it long ways about a half an inch each strip.
I have hamsters and they really like the pine bedding because they like to make hills in the corner of the cage to make beds it more less burry themselfs durring the day. If you use hay this will make it harder for them to do this. Also the pine bedding is nice and soft. My hamsters have been using this for 3 years now and they love it.
hay is itchy, you wouldn't like your hamster to get allegies right? Pine beddings are ideal because they're soft to the hamster's skin and you can be sure that it's a tried and tested bedding for your hamster. However, you can go ahead with the hay beddings but make sure that you observe them for a few days, if nothing happens, then good. GOOD LUCK!
we usually gather twigs, leaves and whatnots lying around outdoors, which they adore.
however during summer months we give them cornhusks. that way, they can take their young out boating along the stream out back. they all smile big with little buck teeth sticking out and squinty eyes beaming back to us in thanks
long live the hampsters!
Yes. I have tried all kinds, and hay is the best. My hamster loves it. It also keeps the smell down compared to other beddings I have tried. Hay and straw are a natural for rodents to nest in.
Try it, and change it about two times a month.
You will find it cheaper, cleaner and nicer for your pet.
