Hamster Vet?

I got a hamster recently and they've been acting very healthy so far. But, I'm scared for their health because my mom won't let me bring them to the vet. What will happen if I don't bring them to the vet? Note that I'm the one who WANTS to take them to the vet and my mom is the one who DOESN'T want to take them to the vet. Also she says that they're like 300-500 dollars an appointment, is that really true because I doubt it.

If there is nothing wrong with the hamster than there is no need for a vet visit. Hamsters do not need shots, etc. If an emergency does pop up then it will need a vet visit.

300-500 dollars is a bit over exagerated. For a routine visit for something simple it is around 100-150, and even that is a lot. I have taken many rats to the vet, and the average cost is about $75. Where I live the average visit is around 45-55 dollars to start(that is just to examine) and then any medications(around 15-25 each), and waste disposal($1.00)

This is not saying I have not paid my fair share of large bills, surgeries will cost more, I paid $1200 dollars of a leg amputation, all pre and post care included.

Unless it is something serious; tumors, serious injuries requiring surgery, etc the cost is usually reasonable and most vet understand that children are limited on money and may do payment plans.

Um... No!!! I am from England and it casts about 拢15 here for a consultation at the vets, which I guess is about $28 to you. So your mum is telling you a porkie. If you had a dog and he broke his leg, amd needed an operation, and a stay at the vets it would be to that ammount, But your little hammie wont break the bank!

That said, your mum's attitude is alarming, in the fact she allowed you to take on the responsibility of a pet, but not the responsibility of its health and welbeing. Im married, and unfortunatly we could not get a rescue cat where we are living right now, but brought our gorgeous fat furball Hamster, Harry a year ago. And of course, even as a married couple, you have to take into account the cost of the pet, and wether we could afford a vet bill should anything happen. You need to ask your mum why she lied and why she is not willing to take your pets health into account.

If the hamster is healthy he doesn't need to see a vet, so don't worry too much right now.

However, if the hamster gets sick or suffers an injury then it most certainly does need to see a vet whatever your mother says and whatever it costs. If she refuses to take it to a vet that qualifies as animal cruelty. Anyone who takes on a pet takes responsibility for its wellbeing, including any trips to the vet that might be required. If your mother agreed to let you have a hamster then she should let you take it to the vet if it is necessary.

Many hamsters can live a long helthy life without ever visiting a vet, so don't worry too much unless it gets sick or injured.

they don't need to go to a vet unless they get sick, but by then its usually too late anyway. wet tail is the main thing u need to watch for, stinky butt, poop and wet on butt. my died at 7 mos from it, never showed any sign of illness til then and died basically in 36 hrs. at the vets, usually a check up is 65 dollars, tests can run it up to 300+ she died 2 hrs after she got to the vet and i stll had a $140 vet bill.

Your mother is wrong. She should never have gotten you a pet if she wouldn't take it to the vet. And no a vet will not cost you 300-500 dollars that is for a dog with serious health issues not a hamster.

My hamster recently got sick with aspiragyllis fungus from Corn Cob bedding (Do Not use this bedding it says its safe but manufacturor says they knew things like this could happen) and the vet bill for a sick hamster was 55 dollars including medicine for it.

If your hamster is acting healthy that means it is healthy and does not need to see a vet. If it starts acting sick then you will need to take it to a vet. Ask your dad if your mom says no and if he says no then ask your grandma and everyone you can think of to help you get the poor defenseless creature to the vet. Your mother thinks less of it because it is a rodent to her but she needs to realize that it is a living breathing thing and needs the same care and consideration we give to our own children. Would she not take you to the doctor if you were sick? Use that against her. It may work. :)

First of all your hamster is fine! If it is healthy, I wouldn't worry!
Hamsters don't need check-ups, so I wouldn't worry about the vets fees!
I live in England, so I wouldn't know how much it costs in America.Over here it only costs around 拢15.

Honestly, honey, your mom is full of crap and just doesn't want to have to pay a vet bill for something that she thinks probably won't ever get sick. Hamsters are just like any other pet and need to have regular check-ups to assure that everything is going good with them. I've NEVER heard of a vet charging $300-$500 for a simple check-up! The ones around here only charge $25 for a check-up and they take every kind of pet imaginable. Your mom is just being ridiculous and isn't teaching you very good responsibility. If you have to, assure her that you'll pay for the check-up personally (if you can). But, I'd advise you to do some thorough research on the vets in your area and find out which pets that they CAN treat and which that they can't. Also, be sure to make sure that their prices are reasonable. A simple phone call can tell you all of that or you can drive by their office and check for yourself. Always remember, pets are people too! They need check-ups just like humans! Good luck!
