Male gerbils have rather prominant testicles, so if you are not sure, it's more than likely a female...

As for getting a friend...How long have you had her alone?? Gerbils are usually only social with their litter mates or other gerbils they are introduced to at a VERY young age...Once they are kept by themselves, it's very hard to get them a cage mate...
You can try if you're willing to get another cage if things dont work out...

You should get some small animal shampoo spray to help you out when introducing them...
Spray both of them with the shampoo so they smell the same...
Pick a nutral territory where they can't get away from you easily(bath tub works well)...
Put them both in at the same time and keep a close eye on them...
If all is well, they should smell eachother for a while, maybe try to clean eachother, then try to find a way out of the tub...
If that happends, put them both in the cage(make sure you clean it out before hand, that way the first gerbils scents arent in it, and rearrange it, that way both gerbils will go exploring the cage...)
Watch them for a while and see how they act, if they don't show any agression, then you should be fine and congrats, if they start to fight though...you need to put them in separate cages...
You can try to keep the cages next to eachother for a few days and try again, but thats about it...

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!
i know it sounds bad, and i dont mean it in a nasty way...here it goes.

look for the balls...if they are there youll see em!

Here is a site that shows and explains what a girl vs. boy gerbil looks like. It even has a test you can take.
http://www.gerbils.co.uk/gerbils/gender.

You can put your gerbil in a clear critter cage or tank without litter in it and look at him/her from below to see what you've got.

Also if you get your gerbil a friend from an AGS breeder, you could bring the other one along to make sure you're right.

Here is a breeder listing:

And, how to introduce too gerbils (slowly and carefully!):
