Goat=idex (found in the food change)?

Does anyone know what this means? My stepson called last night with a project he is working on for school (he is 13) and this is what he said he needed and asked me to look it up on the internet but I can't find anything in regards to this. If you know what this means PLEASE let me know ASAP. Thank you!!!
Answers:
food chain maybe? And a type of goat is an Ibex (looks like an antelope, but is a goat). Bit that would be a lot of misspellings for a school assignment.

Giving my elephant a bath?

What kind of soap should I use?
Answers:
I take mine down to the local swimming pool and let the kids bath them
Ok Stop.
Ivory..get it? Ivory?.... Sorry I just couldnt help it
I'd use a bubble bath if I was you.just don't let him splash in the water to much..
You need a really big wading pool, a hose and some Oatmeal Soap for their thick, but sensitive skin.

Be sure to rub lotion into his whole body afterwards for that silky smooth feeling.
Just take him to the local car wash, he'll be fine on the regular wash, but don't go for the pre treatment, or the wax
johnson's baby soft. Be sure to wash his trunk. LOL
Quit bragging.

Giving a guinea pig water?

if i give my guinea pig water from a water bottle, not a bowl, will it definatly be able to work out how to drink. I have not seen him drink out of the water bottle so far.
Answers:
they have excellent noses, it may him him a bit but he'll definately work it out quite quickly. soon enough you'll be hearing that clinck clink clink non stop
Thats how we have always watered you guinea pigs when i was growing up and they always figured it out. Trust me if a guinea pig is thirsty it lets you know.
He will learn, Mine didnt drink for a day, but when he figured out the bottle with the ball, he drank from then on, just give it time, if it seems that ur guinea isnt going to drink from it, then use a bowl till ur guinea gets used to the bottle.
Your guinea pig will figure out how to use the water bottle. I had a very young guinea pig and thought the same thing but he learned on his own.
i give my guinea pig (dharma) a water bowl. she's quite a drinker now. i had the same problem when i first got her. you will probably need to change the water twice a day when you feed her. good luck to you and piggy.
Definently stick with the water bottle if you can. Bowls tend to get really dirty and messy in the cage. Make sure that it's at a level she can reach.

Girl or Boy name or unisex?

The name is Cupcake and its a hamster.
Answers:
If he resambles a cupcake it is apporpitate
Its a girl's name, though 'girl' and 'boy' aren't really suitable to describe a hampster
Sounds like a girl name. We named our male dog "Snowball" and every one calls him a she!
Girly, but if its cute, hey why not.

I had a female cat named Peter.

I've had a female dog named Cody.

It's all up to you. A hamster wont come when you call it. And you'll raley even use his name.
First thought was girl but could also work for a gay male I suppose:>)
Chewy, Fluffy, Hammy, Chloe, Mort, Pocket, Rocky, Terry, Mickey, Fuzzy, (Cupcake is cute).
Sounds delicious, must be a girls name. Unless you have a hermaphrodite hamster, then I would say unisex.
I just got a hamster too!!! Mine is a Dwarf Hamster, he is really small and cute!!! I named him "Timiature". Kind of a mix, Miniature and Tim. LOL! Have a nice day, and have fun with your hamster!!!
Unisex...unless a cupcake has a gender.

Ginea Pig help!?

I just got a piggy about a month ago and he is still VERY jumpy and wont come out when Im in the room, if he does i have to be SILENT or he will freak and run away. Sometimes he hops straight up in the air while making a squeeking noise etc. I need to excersice him, but I dont know how should I buy a wheel? or let him run around on the floor while I watch??
Answers:
Give your piggie some time. It takes about six months or so for your piggie to become accustomed to you and to trust that you're not going to hurt him.

Guinea pigs are "prey" animals and it is their instinct to run %26 hide from anything that gets too near. Their only defense in the wild is to run or they get eaten! If he is hopping straight up in the air, this is called "popcorning" %26 it means that he is happy!

Make an area of your house "pig proof" and allow him to putter around and explore. The kitchen or bathroom are good places since the flooring is usually a material that can be cleaned easily in case of accidents. Make sure there are no electrical wires, access to behind appliances, etc. that he could get into. Do NOT buy your pig a wheel or rolling ball. These items are made for hamsters, mice, gerbils, and ferrets. The guinea pigs' spine does not bend the same way and the forced use of a wheel or ball can permanently damage your piggie's back. The manufacturers of these products should be sued for including pigs on their usage label.

My very best suggestion to you is to get your piggie a same-sex friend from a local shelter or rescue. They really need to be housed in pairs. It makes them much happier!

Good luck!
he needs time to get used to the atmosphere
best bet is to get a large closed in area.. most ginea pigs as well as other caged animals are nocturnal and run around at nite.. most donot like awheel but you can buy a ball big enough for them. ask at the pet store for more ideas
If he wasn't handled when very young, he may never socialize.
http://www.2ndchance.info/guineapigcare.
Guinea pigs shoud not have wheels, as it is bad for their backs.
Since the fact that the Guinea pig is still very afraid of you, you should buy the wheel because it could either A: bite you in self defense because it doesn't trust you or B: when you let go of it so it can run around it might escape. I have had the problem where I let mine go and it was gone for three days until my mom found it in the dirty cloths hamper. So your best bet is to buy the wheel till it trust you and will come out on its own
ok here is everything i know about guinea pigs because i had one once.i apologize if any of this info was already used..i didn't read the other answers before i answered.
*guinea pigs are nocturnal but they need very little sleep so it really doesn't matter when they are awake.
*a wheel is not good because a guinea pigs back could get injured (i learned that one the hard way)
*a guinea pig is a very noisy animal so some of those squeaks could just be him talking to you.
*talk to him sweetly and slowly everyday and he will eventually warm up to you. he just isn't used to his surroundings yet and all the movement and new things scare him.
*as far as letting him out do what ever is comfortable to you. i let mine out on the floor in an enclosed pen(i used chicken wire but i don't recommend that) ask a pet store employee what would be best.
*your guinea pig will most likely love the outdoors so if possible let him outside in a includes area. BE SURE TO WATCH HIM!!!
i hope some of this info works and that your guinea pig warms up to you soon. they can be really cool creatures.

Getting two female kitten soon?

I thought of the names

Fancy
Spunkey

Can you help me think of more names that not like the average names for pets please
Answers:
you might want to wait to name them till you get them and see what their personalitys are like
so
My advice is get the kittens first before you name them. See what kind of colors they are ... what kind of personality they have.

Thats what i've always done.

For example my new black kitten is mean .. fast so i named him sam [lucifer sam]

My other cats:
Reesey - she has a brown circle on her side, like a reesey cup
Occie (october, tober, occi) - born in ... you guessed it
Lucy - very very very mean ... short for lucifer

I dont like sitting around thinking of names. They mean more when they just come to you b/c of something the cat did .. or a marking.

Good luck =)
What about
Hunter (nice for a girl)
I my self just got 2 siamease mix kittens and had the same problem. i was moving some books around and found a relly old book caled Man,Myth, and magick. im totaly into mythology,Magick and the whole D%26D thing so I named one Mythical Dragon (Myth for short) and the other Magick (still loking for midle name.) I suggest looking into some of your favorite movie or book carectures. im working on adopting another kitten for my BF for his birth day and I thought maby naming him Riddick.

Getting rid of ticks on horses...?

My neighbours horse just came back from being broken in, and he has several scabby flaky patches on areas like his chest, flanks, hind area and girth. I was looking at it closer today and discovered several ticks in one area. There is at least 10 small, unfed baby ticks on each area, around the flaky area.

How do I get rid of numerous tick without pulling them out individually? Ive heard of sprays and similar things, but also heard of horses licking them and dying the next day.
Answers:
Y0U NEED T0 PULL 0FF ALL THE TICKS Y0U CAN. F0R THE SMALL 0NES AND THE UNFED BABY 0NES PUT A G00D C0AT 0F VASILINE 0N THEM, THIS SUFFICATES THEM. AFTER A DAY 0F VASILINE TAKE A B0T KNIFE AND REM0VE THEM. USE A LIGHT SPRINKLING 0F GARLIC P0WDER IN EACH 0F THE FEEDINGS, I USE IT AND IT D0ES KEEP MY H0RSES TICK FREE AND IT ALS0 CUTS D0WN 0N THE FLY'S AS WELL.
I put a powdered garlic in my horses feed twice a day. This helps with fleas, ticks and FLIES. Got to love it.
For now, pull off as many as you can find. Go through his whole coat. Then either call a vet to get a recommendation for a tick spray, or go to a tack store and see what they have in stock.
I would pull the ones that you can otherwise let them get big and fat and they will fall off. You can add alittle vinegar to his grain that will come out of his sweat glands when he sweats and should keep ticks and mosquitos away.

Getting rid of fleas?

a stray cat has infested my 3 cats and yard with fleas. they are now all over the house.

does anyone have an easy inexpensive solution?
Answers:
Get a flea comb and comb through the hair of each cat in turn, making sure you don't miss any area. You will have to treat your house with a flea powder if you have carpets. It is a good idea to get into the regular habit of using the comb on your cats for flea control. Apart from that you can get a spot on treatment from your vets, which will work fairly rapidly (e.g. Advantage) but this is not a cheap option if you have three cats. You could get them flea collars in addition to the combing, these are usually relatively cheap and can be bought from any pet store or supermarket (usually cheaper).

Hope this helps.
yes, they have "bombs" they are a small aresol can and they have the exterminant in them, then you press the leaver down and you have to leave your house for about 2 hours and then you came back and it will be a slight smell but it won't be strong. they cost around 8 or 9 dollars
Don't scrimp. Do it the right way. Book the cats into a kennel and get them dipped. Bug bomb the house - which will require an overnight stay away from your house. It's expensive and it sucks, but you don't want these things coming back
eucalyptus trees keep fleas away.
For the cats its best to use one from the vet. After this same problem i found that the best way to get rid of them in the house was simply using a flea removing carpet fresh. I even sprinkled it on the couch and beds and wherever else i could get it! Wait a while n vaccum!
Poultry Dust, it works on fleas, ticks, and lice. You can use it on livestock, house pets, and in side and out side your house. My dogs and cat have never had a flea cents. (there all out door animals, except the cat he's both)
The first two answerers have it right, depending upon what you can buy or exterminator licensing available in your area.

Instead of sending the cats for a dip, there is a good flea spray that works. Cats usually rebel against it, like most of us hate the smell of insect repellent; but it won't harm the cat. Hold the neck like the cat's mother, and spray, from the neck down, away from its face; then cover the cat's face with your hand, and with the nozzle about six inches away spray the back of its head and ears. A few years ago, the product was made by the Black Flag manufacturers, but not sure what might now be the name. Brushing the cat out with a clean stiff brush the following day is a good idea, and washing the brush with hot water and dish detergent afterward.
I have researched this on the web myself. They say you can get a bowl of water, put a tea lite candle in it (I guess in a cup) and leave it like that at night and it says the fleas will be attracted to the light. I don't know if it works or not, but it's worth a shot.
Fumigators usually work, but it can get expensive.
There is another one, but if you have kids it might not be good. It says mix four parts Borax with one part salt, pour it over your carpet like Carpet Fresh and it dehydrates the eggs.
Another one, rock salt, put it under couches and other furniture where small children won't eat it and it can last for years.
Hope one of these works.

Getting my rabbit sprayed?

How much does it cost on average to get your rabbit sprayed?
Answers:
Bless you for going to get your rabbit spayed!!!

Call up the local vets, call up the animal shelter-- findout who gives the lowest prices for Reputable, responsible work.

When your rabbit is spayed, please follow the vet's instructions to keep her from tearing out her stitches or opening up the spay incision.
Actually, are you asking about getting your rabbit spayed? Ie. fixed so you don't get little baby rabbits? It varies on the size and age of the rabbit, as well as your vet, so I'd start consulting different offices.
Depends on the colour. White rabbits are common and should be the cheapest ! The multicoloured ones can be a fortune. Hope this helps mate !!
don't you mean SPAYED
Please only spray it red. It's just cruel in other colors. And blue is by far the most expensive! So start saving and happy spraying!
Colour has nothing to do with it!! Just call the vets and ask them. It doesn't cost anything to make a phone call and they will tell you over the phone.
If you are asking about getting your rabbit spayed, which is a good idea for health and not having babies, the cost will vary depending on where you are in the country. You want to be sure that your vet is knowledgeable about rabbits and that your bunny comes home with several days of pain medication.

Nuts help
You will have to coax her out with one of her favourite snacks, its good to try and keep her out as much as you can, they become far more sociable and really happy,I am sure if you persevere she will come out again.
Try using treats to lure her out of the cage then let learn to trust you then eventually she should just get comfortable with you enough and go on to you naturally. You should also get in contact with a professional bird keeper for sure!
leave her cage door open just keep a eye on her she will make her own mind up,and not all parrots are friendly,my parrot bites every one apart from me,but when we first got him he liked my partner

Gerbils are cute.?

anyway, how do i know if my gerbil is a girl or a boy? i think it's a boy... but idk he doesn't let me handle him long enough to try and figure it out. anyway i want to know cos i want to get him/her a friend. i don't want any mating in my house!
Answers:
Male gerbils have rather prominant testicles, so if you are not sure, it's more than likely a female...

As for getting a friend...How long have you had her alone?? Gerbils are usually only social with their litter mates or other gerbils they are introduced to at a VERY young age...Once they are kept by themselves, it's very hard to get them a cage mate...
You can try if you're willing to get another cage if things dont work out...

You should get some small animal shampoo spray to help you out when introducing them...
Spray both of them with the shampoo so they smell the same...
Pick a nutral territory where they can't get away from you easily(bath tub works well)...
Put them both in at the same time and keep a close eye on them...
If all is well, they should smell eachother for a while, maybe try to clean eachother, then try to find a way out of the tub...
If that happends, put them both in the cage(make sure you clean it out before hand, that way the first gerbils scents arent in it, and rearrange it, that way both gerbils will go exploring the cage...)
Watch them for a while and see how they act, if they don't show any agression, then you should be fine and congrats, if they start to fight though...you need to put them in separate cages...
You can try to keep the cages next to eachother for a few days and try again, but thats about it...

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!
i know it sounds bad, and i dont mean it in a nasty way...here it goes.

look for the balls...if they are there youll see em!

Here is a site that shows and explains what a girl vs. boy gerbil looks like. It even has a test you can take.
http://www.gerbils.co.uk/gerbils/gender.

You can put your gerbil in a clear critter cage or tank without litter in it and look at him/her from below to see what you've got.

Also if you get your gerbil a friend from an AGS breeder, you could bring the other one along to make sure you're right.

Here is a breeder listing:

And, how to introduce too gerbils (slowly and carefully!):

Gerbil.?

Is it ok to give gerbils a bath? and if it is ok, then how do you do it?
Answers:
Gerbils should be given a chinchilla dust bath in a shallow bowl once or twice a week to keep their fur soft, clean, and shiny (they love it - but remove the bowl after about a half hour or it becames a potty). If you want you can give this to them every day.

People do wash their gerbils before a gerbil show, but then the gerbils sit in front of a space heater basking in the warmth until they are completely dry. If you don't do this, as others have said, they could get sick or die of chill. I don't think a pet gerbil should need a bath (with water and kitten shampoo though) like the show gerbils get.
Do not give your gerbils a bath. They are very prone to losing body heat fast, and it could make them very sick. If your gerbie is looking a little ruffled up or dirty, get some chinchilla sand, and put it in a bowl and offer it to your gerbils. Get the sand, the dust is incredibly dusty.
Never give a gerbil a water bath. You can however give them a sand bath using chinchilla sand. This much safer for them. A water bath can cause a respiratory infection in them.
No, they clean there own self's. =)
No Gerbils can not be bathed them groom themselves
I give my gerbil a bath with a washcloth with a little bit of dial soap. When I say a little bit I mean like one drop.
never ever get your gerbil a bath! it will kill it. but if you fill like you need your gerbil to get clean go to your local petstore and (petsmart) has a powder stuff that you gerbil will roll around in and it cleans them and the oder on them to!!

Gerbil species questions and other things?

im planning on getting 2 gerbils. and i have a few questions:
. what are the common breeds in the pet shop and which is the most laid back
. are male or females the most laid back
. how long do they live for
Answers:
In 1964 gerbils were first introduced to the pet industry. These were the Mongolian gerbils.

Since Gerbils are very social, they should have atleast one companion. If they don't have any companions, the gerbil may die earlier than most gerbil's 2-4 years. Males tend to bite more often than females do, so female gerbils are preferred more by gerbil owners.
Male and Female will obviously mate so depending on if you want babies, female and female would be better if you don't want to breed, but don't introduce a male to the 2 females as the females will fight over him and kill him. Gerbils life span is 2-3 yr s can be 5 depending on how well kept. By the way stock up on cardboard tubes, packaging as they love the tear it up!
There aren't any gerbil breeds of Mongolian gerbils, so far, only gerbil colors. The most commonly available colors are agouti (like a wild bunny), black, lilac, nutmeg, dark eyed honey, and argente. Some pet stores sell spotted gerbils, too.

Mottled gerbils (very, very spotted) can have a tendency to be docile and deep sleepers, but there really are now differences among gerbils of different colors.

If you want to get the fancier colors, you'll probably have to get a gerbil from a breeder. There is a listing of breeders off of www.AGSgerbils.org and also there is a show coming up on May 19th if you are in the New England area.

Males are slightly less active than females -- but I wouldn't describe any healthy gerbil as laid back, they are animals on the go and ready for action.

If you get gerbils from healthy lines they will live from 3 to 3 1/2 years. Gerbils typically have no or few health problems in their lifetime.

Gerbil Question...Breeding and such...?

My friend has a male gerbil, that is albino, and i have a female that is white with black spots, (really cute!) we were talking about breeding them, but i know nothing about gerbil breeding, only rabbits and dogs. How long are they pregnant for? Anything special I need to do in the cage? How long do we leave the pair together? How soon do I seperate the babies?? Thanks so much, any additional info will be greatly appreciated!
Answers:
Check out the care handbook on www.AGSgerbils.org. It has a whole section breeding gerbils that would answer your questions. It also tells you how to introduce two gerbils, gradually and carefully with a split cage.

You'd need to leave the dad in with the mom to raise the first litter, then a couple days before the babies hit five weeks take out dad and sons and let mom and a daughter raise the second litter.

Gerbil males are great dads, and lone mothers sometimes don't do well without help of the male or an immature daughter.

PS - half of the babies will be black and half spotted black. You could get other colors too if the parents have some recessive genes.
you can seperate the babys after 6 weeks.
It takes 7 months to breed.
Gerbils are usually pregnant for 24 days and then mate again after they deliver the pups. The only special you need to do to the cage is leave it alone as much as possible once the young ones are born. We had a silver male and a female that looked like a Siamese cat and they turned out pups that looked like
It's probably best to remove the pups after they have their eyes open and are a good size. Sex them first, and separate them, unless you want tons more gerbils.

Gerbil injury, help needed!!!?

3 days ago my 19 year old sis accidentally dropped my black 3 year old gerbil. at first she was shocked, and when we put her back in her cage and didnt come out of her house for a day. the next day we noticed that her toes on her left leg were tightly packed together and she refused to put her foot down, so she just limped. theres no sign of pain, and shes still pretty active. ( though she rests in her house longer then usual.) do you think shes crippled permanently? or is this a short term thing? please help!
Answers:
theres a possibility that it might b permenant. but i would definetyly (if u have the time and money) c a vet. that way u can no 4 sure, that way, if there r even broken bones, u can c 2 it that they get the proper care they need (the broken bones/the whole leg i mean)
A hard fall like that is causing the animal pain especially the way you described the condition of the foot. Don't be surprised if the animal bites when you try to handle it. A lot of times after such a traumatic event, the animal bites to defend itself.
We have had animals brought into our shop that fell, were dropped, or had other injuries. I feel very sad for the animal.

Gerbil hurt leg?

We were playing with my gerbil and when I put it back into the cage I noticed she was not using her back left leg. She can still walk but her leg isn't touching the ground when she is walking. It does touch the ground when she is eating.
Answers:
Give it a day or two. If it isn't better, call a vet who treat small animals and see if she/he recommends that you bring the gerbil in to be seen.
My guinea pig had a broken leg once, we took her to the vet and the vet put a cast on it. And now she is fine.
Julie, its Alexandra!!! Is Sherbet okay? let her rest over night, or a few days, then check to see if she uses her foot more.

Gerbil has mites!?

My gerbil has mites but i can't get the medicine to cure it. My guardians just gave me a little chuckle when i told them that it needs medicine. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of mites without the medicine? By the time I could find a job and then raise the money my gerbil will already be dead. Any information or websites about mites would be greatly appreciated.
Answers:
I have used ivermectin for my rats that had mites and lice. You can buy it for about 20 bux at pet stores that carry horse products. It is made for horses and comes in a really large tube. Take a toothpick and a "small" dab about the size of a pinhead and place it in some bread, roll it around until the bread is smushed. Give two doses about ten days apart.

Ivermectin is the drug your vet would give your gerbil in the form of an injection.

The website i listed is a little dense, but if you look towards the middle of the page where it says Antiparasitics, you will find some information about ivermectin.

I hope this helps.
I think the only way is a injection from the vet my rat had mites and they were eating away his ears it was horrible after 3 weeks they were back to normal it wasn't cheap but it was worth it !
Ivermecin is only about $8 from a vet. You may need to pay for an office visit, too. Maybe if you called a vet and found out the exact cost and were willing to pay for it, your guardians would be more open to the idea. Now, some of the Petsmarts have an in-store vet office, so you could perhaps bring your gerbils in at the same time as you were buying food.

Here is instructions on how to treat mites. If you can't get the meds, you could try the rest of the treatment without the meds, but it can be very hard to get rid of them. One live mite and you have to start all over again as they multiply.

http://www.agsgerbils.org/gerbil_tales/i...

PS - mites can spread to people and make your belly itch, badly -- use head and shoulders shampoo as a body wash to get rid of them on you. This is another really good reason not to let the problem go untreated!

Gerbil has bald spots?

My gerbil had one bald spot about a month ago and i figured he might have gotten into a fight with his brother.Just yesterday i noticed that he has a second bald spot. The two spots are below his ears on opposite sides. If you could help me figure out what is wrong with him i would really appreciate it.
Answers:
Well a tiny bit of bare skin right below the ear is normal, but if the bald spots are much bigger than the ones on his brother, then there is definitely something wrong.

If gerbils are fighting, the normal places to see bites are near the base of the tail and on the face, and you would have seen a scab or blood before you saw a bald spot.

He is probably scratching his ears a lot, but there is probably something wrong to make him scratch them that much. Do the gerbils scratch themselves a lot? They may have mites or ringworm. When one of my gerbils had mites, she scratched her ear so much that she made it bleed a bit. If you can see little tiny scabs below their fur, then they've probably been itching a lot. Mites can sometimes get into bedding or food at a pet store and a lot of gerbil owners freeze their gerbil supplies to prevent this. Whatever it is, you should see a vet if you find bald spots on your gerbils. They can give your gerbils a medicine to kill the mites, and the poor guy will be a lot happier if he isn't itchy all over. Even if it isn't mites, something must be making him scratch his ears a lot, and a vet can help you figure out what that is (because it's not normal for a gerbil to have bald spots).

There is a yahoo group for gerbil owners called AGSgerbils, and there are a lot of people who know a lot about gerbils there who are happy to answer your gerbil questions. They might also be able to help you find a good vet for your gerbils.
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/agsge...
Have you asked your vet? If there's anything wrong, the vet could probably figure out the problem and the cure.

Gerbil Bedding.HELP!?

I got my young gerbil about two or three months ago. He has been fine with his bedding for a while. But all of a sudden he seems to not like it and sleeps completely without out it, underneath him is just the glass of the aquarium. I thought about getting him ceder or alpine sheddings, but my dad said that kind was bad for him. I don't know what to do!?!?!?
Answers:
Your dad is 100% right about the litter and is smart to tell you no to cedar and pine shavings, but also don't use aspen or saw dust all of these are harmful or toxic when mixed with the animals urine especially in a tank that already has almost no ventilation except for the top. Anyone that tell you these things are fine to use with a gerbil don't have any idea of what their talking about and are endangering any small animals they use it with. Any site on gerbils will tell you the same thing on any wood shavings and the toxic interaction with the urine.

Have you considered a plastic bottom and wire top cage such as the ones sold by Super Pet? I primarily use them and wish that's all I could use, but my mice are too small for these and most all wire cages and will escape, so they're the only ones we ever use tanks for. What kind of litter do you use? The bedding sold for small animals called fluff by some should never used. It can become entangle around the feet or legs and will cause harm to them or worse, they have been known to chew off their won foot to get loose when tangled.

I would leave him alone, this will not harm him at all, he's trying to stay cool. Like I said the tanks have inadequate ventilation and he's simply getting too hot in there.

Also you need to watch out for mold growth where he urinates or where the water bottle sits. This is common with a cage not cleaned often or when it's too hot in the cage. The mold causes respiratory infection, pneumonia, and death to them.
It's summer, and the temperature inside the house has probably changed. Just because he sleeps on the glass, doesn't mean he doesn't like his bedding. My rats do it all the time, when they want to sleep on something cool.

I use corn cob bedding, so if you are still interested in switching his bedding, consider it. Doesn't produce an odor as quickly as wood shavings do.

Your dad is correct about Cedar bedding being bad for your gerbil. It can lead to upper respiratory infections.
do not use cedar, pine, clay bedding for small animals. (don't listen to the guy below me.)

These have been known to cause upper respiratory infections and life threatening problems because of the ammonias and dust particles in the bedding.

the only recommended bedding materials are Corn Cob, Carefresh brand and Ammonia free Aspen shavings.

Pet stores, Veterinarians, and responsible small animal owners with experience will all tell you the same thing.

I personally prefer Carefresh or Aspen as I have not had luck with corn cob. Others have had great luck with it.

But please don't use Cedar, Pine, or clay for small animals ever ever ever.

Also- what tempurature do you have it where he is staying? Is he out of direct sunlight? don't put them in a place where its below 55 degrees or above 85. (if he's in a cooler area- try giving him extra bedding to snuggle in)

keep out of direct sunlight and drafts.

Also, try giving him nesting materials. You can find some nice cottony materials at your local petstore. Its very healthy for them to build nests to sleep in, and will actually be beneficial for them.

Make sure he has fresh water daily.

as long as he's acting normal, using his wheel, enjoying out time in his roll about ball, and active at night... he should be fine.

If he slows down, doesn't want to eat, has a wet (full of poo) looking tail... he should see a vet.

------- the bedding isn't only my opinion as a former vet tech with experience, and as a small pet owner, here's someone else's opinion. --------

"cedar emits volatile compounds which are irritating to the respiratory tract (and may also cause changes in the liver). Pine shavings also release volatile compounds to a lesser but still significant extent. These beddings (particularly cedar) may also cause a skin sensitivity or allergy, and should be avoided. Aspen shavings, care fresh and corncob are preferable beddings."

This comes straight from a veterinarian specializing small animals.
ceder and alpine rnt bad for a gerbil i used it mine was just fine
first you need to get your gerbil a wire frame cage, aquariums are poorly ventilated just notice the smell above his aquarium , get him some straw that is the best and change his bedding daily, cedar and pine shaving are also good they are most certainly not bad for him
get aspen or cozy critter shavins' its low in dust and oils which cause respiratory problems in rodents, available at petsmart or petco.
Wow, there are some pretty good answers up there. o.o

Anyways, I think the gerbil just needs some place where it's cool. Maybe put a little bit of the bedding to the side so that some of the glass is uncovered, so then your gerbil can get on that all it wants whenever it's hot.
Also, do not put your gerbil under direct sunlight! They get dehydrated quickly. Be sure to always have cool, fresh water available for your gerbil and to put it in the shade.
Have you ever heard of Eco Bedding? It is the best -- BEST -- bedding sold! It is crinkled paper, soft, fluffy and totally dust free. Little animals just LOVE to play and tunnel in it.

Aspen is fine for gerbils. There is so much controversy about pine and cedar -- why take a chance on using them?

However, I have learned over the years that what WE think is comfortable, isn't necessarily what THEY think is comfortable. It probably is warmer in the house and the bare glass feels good to him. If he didn't like sleeping on the glass he wouldn't. At the same time, if he doesn't want to sleep in the bedding, he won't, no matter how great it is.

Just for your information -- gerbils (like most animals) really NEED others of their own kind to be happy. You should never have a SINGLE gerbil -- in fact, it's very irresponsible for pet stores to SELL single gerbils. However, it's too late now -- an adult gerbil will almost never accept another gerbil -- they will fight to the death. Next time, however, please get TWO.

Gelding with seperation anxiety?

My 6 yr old Arab gelding FREAKS out when he is being ridden alone in the indoor arena and cannot see other horses-he doesn't have any particular buddy as I rotate his stall and paddocks quite frequently-but he whinnies constantly and will not listen to me-and even crow hops in trying to look out the arena gate. When he does this I circle him and try to divert his attention. This helps with the crow hopping-but he still whinnies and doesn't pay attention very well-any tips?
Answers:
Stalled:
Lack of trust in us by a horse is scarey. He cannot think when he is freaking.
Don't rotate stalls as you want horses to get used to a program, settle down and expect normal times and friends. It would be very good for him to develop a pal.
Put him in the area with another horse. Seriously. Tie a good horse safely, work steadily away and when he gets fussy move closer, ease his very real anxiety and gently work away. NO amount of punishment is going to regain your horse's confidence and attention: so go slow, enlist a steady buddys help, and when he can be weaned from its company you will have that safe, quiet, non freaky gelding again. Never use circles, backing or any other ability the horse has a punishment. Those are normal riding expectations and not to be abused. Backing or circles are good movements and should not be associated with bad behavior or anger. They might be a great emergency quick fix, but not a behavior changer.
Invoke happy good bonding feelings. After all, your trying to build a relationship as a steady trustworthy teacher. Give a little, get a lot. Meet his needs and when he does not need them so badly, you have won his heart. He has a personality, too! Arabs are affectionate..its one of their great charms.
You should work with him daily, seperating him from the other horses for a few hours at a time. Dont let him get away with this behavior because its a disipline problem, and he is not listing to you. When riding and working with him make sure you discipline him and let him know to respect you, don't let him walk all over you in any situation. Before riding try loungeing him in the indoor arena untill he settles down. This will take the edge off him, and make him concentrate more when you are riding.

If he whinnies while you are lounging, leading and groomming him, dont let him get away with this. Give him a smack on the shoulder and tell him no. Any time he is paying more attention to other horses then he is to you, you need to disipline him. Work on his ground manners, if you break him of these habits on the ground then riding him will be easier.
He's just not a people-horse. That's fine. Would you punish a horse who like people, but didn't like any horses? Try to work with him, let him know you're there for him, maybe let him get a horse friend. If he has one specific buddy, and the buddy is always there wen ur horse gets back to his stall, then he'll calm down and enjoy the ride!
Good answer , rsc!! Something else that works, is when he dosent listen to you... back him up. To a horse, that is punishment (without pain). You will get his attention back on you. He will soon learn, when he behaves.. he gets to see his buddies. Good luck with him.
This sounds more like a no-respect issue rather than seperation anxiety. I'd say some major ground work is in your future. But a great thing that works for a horse that pay's little to no attention is moving him in tight circles. This will also prevent him from crow-hopping or cow kicking. If you continue to let him get away with crow-hopping it's only a matter of time before he's bucking. Tight circles will discipline him and prevent those dangerous behaviors. You can also do circle's for when ever he whinnie's or goes to munching on nearby forage. Also, it wouldn't hurt for you to carry have mecate reins- you can use the mecate to lightly spank his butt every time he goes to crow-hopping and to get his feet moving when you are asking for him to circle.

You may also have a problem with boredom. Your horse may be needing a little bit more of a challenge. Add ground poles or obstacle's when you're riding. This will get his mind on his feet and the task you are asking of him and off his pasture mate's and freedom.
the simplest thing to do would be to take him out on some trails away from the other horses. trail riding is one of the best and simplest tools for training a horse. once they are away from home they start paying attention and it gets their mind off the other horses. it also gives them alot more new challenges that they dont get in the arena. my philosophy is that 1 hour on a trail is equal to 4 hours in the round pen/ arena.
My mare is a little like that. She whinnies often when I'm riding her. A trainer I know told me to tie her as far from the other horses as possible, and leave her (safely tied and supervised, of course) for a few hours a day. She said by the fifth day, the nervousness would go away, and she would grow independent of the other horses. Hopefully, your gelding will learn to leave the other horses out of his mind, and get to leaning more on you for companionship when you're with him. It takes time, but it might be worth it to try.

Gave Hermit Crabs a bath and three legs fell off! Will he die or be ok?

I have had my hermit crabs for a while in the same habitat humid, warm, food, salt and fresh water. Well today I was giving them a bath and I stressed out one of them I think . I think the water was too hot cause they both tried bookin it out of there. I took one out and before I could get to the other one he dropped 3 legs. Is he gonna be OK I'm freaking out? Did I cook my crab? I've been reading other answers and some say they will die and others say they will grow back and live. Anyone than knows for sure please help! In how many days will I know for sure?
Answers:
I'm going to ditto all those answers.

They fall off all the time, and they do grow back. I have a saltwater crab called an Electric blue hermit that eats its legs. lol. Don't worry. he'll be fine. Its the nature of the beast (So to speak.)

At first a "gel limb" forms which starts out as a little bud or bump, then develops over the course of a few molts into a new leg (or claw), though it may be smaller than the original. Your crab may undergo more frequent molts until the limb is regenerated.

anything can cause the legs to fall off. Just make sure his needs are met, you keep him on appropriate bedding, make sure no bugs or mites are around... and you're fine. in fact, it will be interesting to watch the regrowth process and molting until the new leg is just right.

when it comes to bathing, Your hermit crab will bathe itself if you provide it with fresh water (no chlorine) in its bowl or seawater in a separate bowl,

but it is still a good idea to bath your hermit crab once or twice a week. Simply submerge your hermit crab in room temperature water and allow it to air dry. It's easy and will help keep your hermit crab happy and healthy.

he'll be fine. they'll grow back eventually
hill be okay! i like your picture!

good luck!
Crustaceans lose legs in the wild all the time. They should grow back! As for the bath, all you need to do is fill a pan with a tiny bit of cool water and put them in. Let them walk around in it to clean off. I would be gentle next time and try not to use hot water. Sorry this happened, but they should be ok. Good Luck
well ur lucky ,crustations(crabs ,lobsters...etc.) there lost limbs even EYES will grow back !!! keep the water room temp! next time
He is molting

Gave away meerkat!!!?

I baught a meerkay illegaly in nsw australia I took it home and after the first day could see how sad he was I know EVERYTHING about meerkats and how much they need the group and things like that but at the time of purchase wasent thinking about its happienes just mine then when i knew he was so sad I took him to the RSPCA what would you have done?
Answers:
Hi Meerkat,

Well yes, it wasn't very wise buying a Meerkat illegally. Here in South Africa you can not buy a meerkat but I know a few people you lived on farms that had meerkatte as pets. By the hearing of things I hear they make quite cute pets. I know they are creatures who live with their families and they look after each other. Maybe that is why your meerkat looked lonely.

Your idea of the Meerkat sanctuary sounds like a very cool idea.. Good luck with it...
Knowing what you know I would not have bought it in the first place, especially as it encourages people to sell them. But we all make mistakes.

Couldn't you have rescued a second one and thus keep yours?
You should know better and never buy animals that belong in the wild. Firstly knowing it was illegal you should have reported the person you bought it from, secondly you only contributed to saying its ok to take animals from the wild and sell them on the black market.

Also since you claim to know everything about meerkats, why did you purchase this animal full knowing that they operate in huge groups are very social animals.

I would never buy an animal full knowing its illegal, knowing it belongs in the wild with others of its kind. Stick to domesticated animals and stop supporting things that are illegal. I hope you feel bad!

Gap in the market ?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?
Answers:
Probably the same reason there isn't cat flavoured dog food!
Hmm, interesting. If a bit trivial.

Maybe you should fill the gap?

Although i am sure it would be difficult to make authentic mouse flavour, but with all the artificial flavourings about i am sure you could find a substitute!!

However, i recommend you stick to your day job, if you were thinking of doing it lol.

Althoough mentioning it here may let someone else nick your idea, so maybe you should!!

Oh my God i can't believe what a long answer i wrote for this type of question!

Thank you for sharing!!

:)
Because cats prefer their mice freshly caught, they taste much better when you have just killed your own. Ask my cat !!
because the cat would make a mess throwing it about

FYI- pony is not the young horse- it's actually a small horse?

Answers:
The definition of a pony/horse can be confusing because they are defined differently for different proposes.

A horse and pony of the same size will not be the same. Ponies have a different conformation to horses, their digestive system is slightly different and they are usually hardier and have better feet. They are often a natural breed (a breed that hasn鈥檛 been created by humans). There are natural breeds of horse too, including the arab.

I have a welsh/arab cross who I think of as a pony, despite being over 14.2, while the falabella breed is the smallest in the world and is considered a horse.
Well, yes and no.
A pony isn't a young horse, a foal is, but he isn't a small horse either because his proportions are a little different. A small horse is a miniature horse. A pony is a pony.
Just to clarify a bit...
A pony is a small equine, measuring under 14.2hh (58 inches) at the withers. There are specific pony breeds, with individuals reaching heights over the 14.2 limit. Likewise, there are horses that mature well under what is considered minimum height for the breed.

A foal is a young equine (either horse or pony). Males are called colts and females are known as fillies.
a pony is a equine that is at or below 14.4 hh (hands high). It is not a foal (baby horse) or a miniture horse (a small horse). They are called ponies for a reason.
YES! THEY ARE TWO DIFFERRENT BODY TYPES!!!

Friend ran over an animal in my neighborhood -- help?

So ... my friend ran over an animal on the way to pick me up in my neighborhood. What do we do? Do we just leave it there? Do we call something? ... I FEEL SO BAD. I DIDN'T MEAN TO RUN IT OVER. IT WAS A MISTAKE -- I SWEAR. I DIDN'T CHECK MY REARVIEW. #@%*@%@%
Answers:
depends like if u know the owner you might wanan tell them also if its a wild animal you are not legally allowed to pick it up i know its a weird law so if its a wild animal then leave it were it is maby give some more info i hope this helped =D
What kind of animal? It depends because it could be someone's pet. If it looks like a rabbit, look to check if it has a tag, if not the best thing to do is remove it yourself but you can just leave it there. A dog or cat or cat should be reported.
You will probably have to tell the neighbor sometime soon because he will think it is strang that his animal is missing. Just tell the neighbor that i was a mistake and you didnt do it on purpose and that you are sorry for what happened. He or she will probably understand.
What kind of animal was it? Is it dead?
The kind thing to do would be to go back and check. If it looks like it could have been a family pet, knock on a couple doors and see if anyone knows. The family would feel better to know what happened to their pet.
If it wasn't, you should just move it to the side of the curb. Save anyone else from running over it.

Freestyle to music competition test!?

i am going to my first freestyle to music competition and i have no idea where to begin!
i have looked at all the compulsary movements but thst just have seemed to scare me more! and where to begin finding the music?
HELP! :)
Answers:
It is extremely hard to put together a freestyle without the help of a professional choreographer- you need music that fits your horse's tempo and style. Then you fit the moves to the music, matching it perfectly with the drum beats.
If the compulsary movements are scaring you, maybe you are not ready to do a freestyle. Those movements are the basics for the level that you are riding in. If you can not do the test sufficently at the level the freestyle is, there is no way you could do a freestyle.

I do know a few people who put together their own, and it usually takes 2 months or so (or 1 month if working every day) to find music, add complementary movements for the music and your horse, and then practice until perfect. It is not something you can wing together in a week and expect it to be good.

Music: you can use any music without words. The most common is classical, but I have seen country and rock ones as well, depending on the horse. You can browse the internet/stores looking for music, and then need a splicing tool on the computer to put chunks of music together. It can be done on a mix tape, but it is hard to get a good blending effect.

Good luck! I would love to do a freestyle (we are at 1st level now) but I do not have the time, money, or creativity to do so.
Why the hell is this in pets?
It's likely that you should learn more about it, go to one and watch... Join a club where they work together, talk to people who already participate.. I wouldn't enter until you got your stuff together.. You will look a little out of place if you haven't gotten your routine together.
Its in pets because a horse is a pet! duh.

Anyway, the first step to a good musical ride oir freestyle dressage test, is the music, look around for something without lyrics, the jitterbug is a good song, as is those jivy upbeat songs.
Next, enlist the help of a trainer or coach, that way, you can get help with some of the movements tath you must include, obv. it would have walk, trot and canter, so try to arrange the movements and their beats (footfalls) with the beats in the song, walk =4 trot = 2canter=3 etc etc

Make sur ethe music starts with a solid beat, and when you finish, so does the music.

A good place for music is the second hand stores, get a vinyl and they may have a record player, check out the jive names, and then write them down and get it on cd, also the internet, its just a metter of getting NO lyrics.

Thats all i can help with right now, i havent done a freestyle before, but i have done musical rides throughout my pony club years, and ive coriographed the rides also.

Good luck, and i hope its a lot of fun.

FREE spray and nutering clinics?

Hi, i have a female dog that is around 9 months. i am interesting in getting her fixed...but do not have alot of cash at the moment. Are there any clinics around Northridge California that you may know of? Free would be ideal, but cheap will also have to do i guess. All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!
Answers:
the word is spay, not spray.
most clinics will do it for free if you have found and took in the pet.
at least they do where i live in the sacramento placer and el dorado counties
As far as I know, there's no such thing anywhere. (I could be wrong though.)

Occasionally, clinics will offer free neutering and discounted spaying. Just keep a lookout and you'll find something.

Kudos on wanting to spay your animal.
Check you local SPCA,they have certain days for free and low cost neutering for low income familys.
If there's a Petsmart in or around your area, they often have visits from vets that will spay or neuter your pets for about $10 or so. You'll have to give them a call and find out when the next visit will be, though, as they don't keep a consistent schedule. You could end up waiting for up to three months, but that's as long as I've known it to take.

You can also call your local humane society or pets shelter and ask them the same question. They may have some information or recommendations for you.
Yes, get in touch with LA Animal Services at:
http://laanimalservices.com

They have clinic going all the time. Thanks for being a responsible dog parent;^)
Check with your local shelters and rescue organizations. Many offer at least lo-cost spay and neuter clinics. $20 + or -

Fragrant plants pet rabbits can eat?

I want to expand my garden for my rabbit. So far I have basil, mint, and lemon grass. What are other pleasent smelling plants rabbits eat?
Answers:
Well, I don't know about fragrant, but here's a list of plants.

Lettuce
Spinach
Broccoli
White Broccoli

Please don't give your rabbit too much. They can get stomach upsets from too many fresh things. Hope this helps! :o)

Sunshine G.
What a wonderful idea! Fresh foods straight from the garden make rabbits very happy.

You may want to consider growing some of the herbs that are found in the Oxbow Hay Company's "Botanical Hay" (details at http://www.oxbowhay.com/shop/showproduct... ). I can't absolutely guarantee they're all safe for rabbits, but as the Oxbow Hay Company is known for selling healthful foods for rabbits, I strongly suspect they're all safe. The herbs used in Oxbow's hay mix are: chamomile, lemon verbena, hibiscus, lavender, rose hips, comfrey, borage, and red clover blossoms.

You may also want to look at the pictures at http://www.rabbit.org/foster-homes/burro... , which is an article about a garden grown for a rabbit. Again, I can't make any absolute guarantees as to safety, but the article was published by the House Rabbit Society, which is known for its excellent advice on rabbit care.

Personally, I'd feed herbs and other decorative plants only in very small quantities, at least at first. What I would grow in large quantities, if I had the space to grow them, are vegetables from the list at http://www.rabbit.org/care/veggies.html... . I'd definitely include parsley, because it's one of the few vegetables I'll eat myself fresh from the garden without any preparation, and it's nice to be able to share snacks with one's four-legged companion.

A partial list of poisonous plants, to AVOID, is at http://www.rabbit.org/chapters/san-diego... . Note that the green parts of a tomato plant are deadly, so rabbits can't be allowed access to tomato plants.

Good luck! I hope you'll take photos and write about your experiences with gardening for your rabbit, because it's a topic of interest to many people who live with rabbits.

Found baby squirrel?

I found a single baby squirrel in the road today and it was going to get hit by a car if i left it there so I brought him to my house and I have been caring for him. He was a little cold when I found him and he had fleas but he seems to be healthy (his gums are pink and he is not dehydrated) and is not injured at all. I can't care for him on my own because I don't have a lisence and I have cats living in my home. I am having trouble locating a rehabber in the auburn/syracuse, ny area so if you are one or know one please contact me.

Found Baby Rabbit, w/ back legs paralized. How do i take care of it? Cant just leave it 4 mother nature. Help!

Answers:
Take it to the vet. If the rabbit can't be saved the vet will humanely put it out of it's misery. That is so sad.
Call a wildlife rehabilitationist in your area (the shelter or a vet should have the number of one) and let them handle it. They are trained for handling wildlife.
that's great that you saved this rabbit because there is no way that it would be able to survive in nature. You need to take it to the vet and have it checked out of diseases first and the vet would be able to tell you more on how to care for it.sorry I couldn't help more, good luck.
call a vetrenarian
CALL THE ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE...THEY WILL TAKE HIM IN
That happened to me to! find the number of a rehabilitator for wildlife SOON so they can give it a shot. If it doesn't get that shot within 2 hours it will die
ummm wow,

call your vet and ask them what they think. its legs mite just be hurt and not paralized if thats how it is then the rabbit needs to go to the vet real soon...make sure it dosnt have rabies or fles or ticks

be carefull is the best thing

and good job finding it and haveing the hart to try to help it =]
you can make it a lil buggy from wheels for its back end but is best to check and see if it is in any pain in which case u should euthanize it
Definitely call a nature reserve, (get the number from a local vet). They know exactly how to house it, feed it, what kind of nutrients it needs at different stages in it's life. They will have all the supplies it needs to take care of this precious little life and you may even find some new friends there and form a bond that could last a lifetime whereby you might even find pleasure in doing some volunteer work.
I think this little rabbit has come into your life not only to help itself, but to help you. You sound like you have a kind, loving heart and it would be wonderful for you to share it with more animals.
id send it to the vet! or wildlife rehabitation.
i wuldnt keep it, unless ur a qualified vetenarian.
1. keep it warm
2 feed it what ever the vet recommends or they can eat regular Purina rabbit food at 10 days.
3. have vet check it out -most likely will recommend euthanizing the animal as it can not survive in the wild
4. put in wire cage not wood or plastic as the rabbit will try to chew his way out
5. add bedding, water bottle and food
6. Pray.
Post on craigslist.org -- I did that when the neighbor kids were playing with a baby squirrel. I had 2 dozen responses in 30 minutes and found a great re-habber! I searched many different areas-- craigslist was by far the best. (pet section)
Wild rabbits cannot survive in captivity. Most die from heart attacks at a very young age. The only thing you can attempt to do is find a wild life rehabilitate. Your efforts of hand feeding it will be in vain.
Call your local animal shelter immediatly!!! Do NOT handle the rabbit in any way! if you do its chances for survival are extremely slim. So call and absulutly DONT DONT DONT touch it!!
Don't worry about touching it. Someone is going to have to touch it to check it out.

It could have been attacked by something and had damage done to it's spine or the legs themselves. You might not nessecarily see any bite marks.

If you want to fork out the money for vet bills, then call the vets but you will have to keep it, it won't be able to be returned to the wild. If you don't think you want to spend the money or keep the rabbit, call your local animal shelter.
Please call animal control they will take it to the shelter and get it looked at and find a home when it is old enough. Good luck!
If it's a wild baby bunny, you have 2 options. You could call a wildlife rehabilitator, or you could leave it alone and let nature take its course.

If it is a domestic rabbit that got out, take it to a vet.
This bunny most likely has a serious disease that will eventually kill it. For some reason, many orphan bunnies have this problem, and there is no cure. As the disease progresses, it will affect it's front legs, then it wil lose it's appetite, and it might have seizures. This disease only affects wild rabbits, so any pet rabbits you have are safe. You should take the bunny to a wildlife center or other similar place to be humanely euthanized.

Found baby mice in my backyard?

My dog found a nest of about 4 or 5 baby baby mice (haven't even opened their eyes yet), he scratched one of them, but other than that they're fine. I put the injured one back with the others and put all of the nesting stuff back on top of them.

I know nothing about mice, I don't want to let them die or do anything that will kill them, but eventually I want to mow my lawn, you know?

Also I'm a bit concerned my dog may have scared their mom away, any tips on anything I can do?
Answers:
I think you did the right thing, just make sure to keep the dog away and mow around the area. The mother will probably come back and it's very difficult to raise mice that young, even for those with experience. They'll probably wean and move on in three to four weeks (couple weeks after eyes open), at most.
go to thefunmouse.com you can get all the info you need there
We had baby mice in our yard when I was a child, unfortunately we didn't notice until the lawnmower got them.

Wild mice (or any wild animal) will typically not return to a nest or babies after they have been handled by humans. Mice are known to eat their babies (I had pet mice in high school), if the mother does come back, it's possible she will eat them.

It's sad and I know your heart is in the right place, but there's really not much you can do with mice that small. You can't take them to the pet store where the mice are used to being handled because they are too little, not to mention they might have diseases that will make the other mice sick.
You are luckier than me, my dad took a shovel and killed all the ones I found under my dog house. Just keep the dogs away from the area and hopefully the mom will come back, you may have to take over their care if she doesn't thoug...Good luck!
A good idea would be to find a nice box and put a hot water bottle in it, not too hot, but wrap a nice towel around the bottle. try taking the nest and putting it in the box, be very careful though, and take a paper towel and put some warm water on it for them to drink. make sure you keep them warm, and milk every so often helps. if you have questions, you can email me.. Found a Jack Squirrel?

My little boy found our cat playing with a jack squirrel outside last night... The little guy survived through the night, and we have been feeding it warm milk out a little little bottle... Seems to be doing ok still... Just concerned if there is anything else I could do for the poor little guy to make him more comfortable? Any one have any ideas... He does have his eyes open, but does a lot of sleeping.
I figured we couldn't put him back outside if my little boy touched him cause the mother wouldn't come back for him with human scent on him.
Answers:
feed it kitten formula and not regular milk. most pet stores %26 wally-world carry it.

Found a baby squirrel?

It looks uninjured, but skinny. I know I shouldn't feed it, but how can I get it to take pedialyte? any other info would be appreciated
Answers:
first make sure the baby is warm
next .. pick up the squirrel and stimulate him to potty..
next.. mix up some sugar water.. one part sugar to 3 parts warm water.. hold the baby in a blanket.. and give him the sugar water w/ a syringe..
do not feed him cows milk or goats milk.. or human milk.. it will kill him
baby squirrels need esbilac.. the powdered kind.. not the liquid..

but you need to contact a rehabber in your area..
they squirrel needs to be raised and released w/ others .
here is alink
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.

and.. no pedialyte.. he does not need the all the extra crap in it..
now.. if he is dehydrated from diarrhea.. then yes.. pedialyte would be okay..
but im assuming he is dehydrated from starvation.. if thats the case... sugar water.

please contact a rehabber. if u dont know what u are doing!
of course the baby is not going to eat/drink on its own.. ITS A BABY!
YES.. you have to hold the baby. pick up the head!
use syringe!!
i found a bag of hairless creatures and we thought they were puppies. i called the animal control -or whateva- and they turned out to be squirrels. calling animal control's your best bet
If you call a local animal shelter they will direct you to the nearest rehabilitation center. The center will teach it to be a squirrel and then release it back into the wild. I have done this before. You should leave it in one of those rabbit water dispensers on the side of the cage. You should also see what squirrels like to eat and put that in a bowl.
When I found a nest of baby squirrels, I fed them some kitten milk from a bottle and they were all very happy. When they are weaned, they should be released into the wild again so they can return to their instincts. Keeping them too long will keep them from surviving in the outdoor world.

Fostering a nightmare?

I offered a friend from my university where I attend help with her animal welfare society. I originally said that I'd help with adoptions and adoption days since I know how important it is since I adopted mine almost two years ago. I got a call the other day and she needed a foster parent for a "really sweet, nice chiuahua mix". I decided it was ok so I picked hm up yesterday. He has done nothing but mark/pee everywhere (on clean clothes), go through bathroom trash (and i'm female) and spread that around my apartment after chewing on it (gross!!), and pee in the kennel when I leave. Now I am 100% of an animal lover, but I have finals this week, and I'm a graduating senior. Would it be rude for me to call the lady in charge and see if I can give him back? I try to be patient but everything stinks now and I am so tired of cleaning up after him. Please be honest!
Answers:
well i wouldnt call it rude ,and i wouldnt even say you SHOULDNT give the animal back but if i were you i would just stick it out, i just think if you say your gonna do something you should do it come hell or high water, unless keeping the dog is going to cause you true loss in some way i would follow through. i feel a sense of gratification in doing a job especially if its more then i thought i could handle, try adapting to the situation, maybe keep the bathroom door shut or even confine the dog to the kitchen only (or some tiled room) where theres a will theres a way ,im sure you can find some way to get along with that little creep for a while.overcoming adversity builds character.
i don't think it's rude - you're volunteering to do this, plus you're a busy college student. it would be unfair for you to keep the dog since you don't really have time to foster him.

just keep in mind for next time that a lot of dogs that are fostered need some training and work before they can be adopted out.
It's not rude. He's obviously either unhappy or otherwise unbalanced/untrained, and needs more attention than you can give him. Just tell the lady in charge that he's very demanding and you aren't capable of giving him the extra attention right now. I think she'll understand.
not at all, just let them know that at the time when you commited to do this you thought your schedule was not as busy as it really is and that the dog is actually most of the time unsupervised and that you have no time right now to educate him... be honest and tell them that the dog is making a big mess in your place so you might want to give it back and maybe some other time you will want to volunteer again.
im not sure what you expected, but rescue and adopted animals arent always well socialised and trained. these types of dogs usually do need extra care and attention.

theres nothing wrong with taking the dog back and telling her that you just cant at the moment because youre in your final year etc and its just too much at the moment.

it was sweet of you to offer to help out - you just werent prepared.
she might be a little disappointed, but she certainly wont look down on you for it.

.
My only advise is to put the animal in a closed space where it can stay. Make sure there is water and is fed every day. The first day is always the hardest and will take time for the animal to understand why it has to be in a closed area.

This animal is untrained and needs a 100% attention and disobedience. With in mind you have to spend at least 2 hours a day with this animal. If you really can't and you got finals you are just going to have tell the person because just maybe she can find a proper owner sooner.

Good luck!
I understand how hard it is for you, but much like an older adopted child, now there are behavioural issues to deal with.
Giving him back now would just solidify that nobody wants him.
It's worth trying to find a constructive way around this behaviour, it is possible if you have the patience. But I know what college is like...
Perhaps let the people know you simply have run out of time, and cannot make a change with this animal with the time you have, and see what they suggest?
I have done fostering too. Sometimes the dog and the person just don't mesh. I got a dog a while back that had
already gone thru 3 other fosters and sent back. Even tho
he was a mischevious mess, I was able to connect with him
and after a couple of tough days, started to see a lot of
change. But that doesn't always happen and there is nothing
wrong with telling the rescue group that this dog just doesn't fit
with your circumstances at this time. Tell them that you still would like to foster but just not this dog.
It's ok to let her know this dog is not working out as a foster.
And they may not have known how bad he would be for you.

I never give a foster the run of the house. I crate them when I'm not with them and either put them in an xpen, or behind a baby gate or tie them to me with a leash. That way they don't get a chance to do bad things.

It does not sound like you have the experience to be a foster home for this dog. He may not act out as much with someone who knows dogs more.

Also be honest with them and tell them all the behaviors.he may need a vet check to rule out any health causes.
send it back!! no way would i keep that, and you need to be focusing on school---good luc with that, by the way

For those of you that dont think Iams kills animals...Or dont know about it...please.watch this...?

go here

http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video.asp?...

this is a video of people who went in to investigae Iams.the video is very heartbreaking to watch but it is important, people NEED TO KNOW about this. millions of people buy Iams and support this without knowing it.

Towards the middle of the video they show you the animals that are in cages.and how they are treated.

PLEASE i ask with all your heart that you watch this..millions of people dont realize that this is going on..
Answers:
Well, though I share your concerns for the welfare of pets, I think PETA has no room to accuse others of killing animals when they kill far more. They are total hypocrites. Please don't support them.

Check this out

I am aware of this, but to spread the word, please find a video that was not funded by PETA. Most people are biased and don't listen to anything PETA says, even if its well-documented by other sources.
I am aware of this too, thats why i dont buy iams stuff for my dog and cat. I am a vegetarian and i support PETA!:-D

For pet sitters...?

Can you tell me the very first steps for starting a small pet sitting business...currently reading 'Pet Sitting for Profit'. It would be small and I would be the only one working it. I'm wondering if I did have the business and I became ill, who would take my place for my clients? If you have any information or advice, please include it. Thank you.
Answers:
I have a small petsitting business in my neighborhood. I tried putting out flyers--but those weren't very effective. The way I got the clients I have is just through meeting them. People want to trust the people they have watching their pets. If you cant do it because you're sick or something, there is usually someone else in the neighborhood that would be willing to help. I think the key is just to get to know people.
You should put flyers out for volunteers. You can ask businesses if you can put them in there store and hang things up.
1. Get some people to join it
2. Pick a place and time to meet
3. Be creative and make bright signs to advertise
4. Show a parent that you are responceable enough to have a phone with a different number

Good luck and if I see your signs I'll call u to pet sit!
the first step would be to get your house set up for pets.. you have to decide if they would be kept indoor.. outdoors.. in cages... some owners are very picky... I own my own dog grooming business.. but also do pet sitting ( boarding)
If I get sick no one is here to take my place... you just have to do it sick.

For people who know a lot about ducks?

which are more friendlier and nicer. Indian runner ducks or rouen ducks??? ( i want 2 ducks =D).
Answers:
I have had indian runners and rouens, both were equally nice. I enjoyed the indian runners more though. they had more comedy about them it seemed.
well i would suggest getting the indian runner, i really wanted one before but could never find any. rouen ducks are good but they're a little less friendly, but they are cute. i guess either one would be good.
Runners tend to me a more nervous breed. They are very comical, but if you want a good bond, I would go with the rouens.

For people that have departed or dying pets...?

This site is dedicated to cats, dogs, rabbits, lizards, ferrets and anything you wanted to. I don't think this is a waste of points because I have a feeling that it'll help people with the pain of their pets. You can write a speech about your pet, enter its name, its picture and basically anything. Don't forget, this is a remembrance site, and should be treated with respect. I hope this helps someone.

This is good really. This is the first time I read a unique question and yes I want to share here. I had terrier female dog 10 years ago. Her name was Lily. She is always in my mind. Also had female parrot named Rinki. Died 2 year back. Both of my pets were like my family members. My dog Lily loved eating cake, chicken, boiled egg and liked hunting down lizards. Then I read about her in the book. Terrier dogs are good for farms and they hunt lizards, rats etc.
Oh yes she killed rats too. Infact she would cry in low voice if lizard would go out of her reach like on the ceiling etc.
She loved catching sparrows though never succeeded !! She was a good home watcher. We treated her as child. My father bath her. She would hide during bath time and then we would take her out under the sofa.
Then after bath she would jump on the sofa/furniture and roll.
She loved going out like markets etc.
My parrot lived long life. She would whistle and loved drinking cold water during summer days. She knew well what is inside the fridge since lots of eatable things were there.
She liked eating rice, dal. She had her favourite foods too. Not so good food of her likings were thrown by her beak out from the cage !!
Most of the time her cage was in the kitchen on the stool.
She loved being with my mother who is housewife.
I suggest that one should keep pets and they are our responsibilies.
That's a lovely touching gesture. Thank you
I was devastated when my cat Charlie died, so much so that I won't get another. I can't cope with the pain.
I have heard about the Rainbow Bridge and truly hope that something like that exists. I have owned and lost so many sweet pets, I would love to have them sitting there waiting for me when I am ready to cross over.
I have always believed that I will, one day, be reunited with all my pets, and knowing that there are others who feel the same way is a comfort. Thank you for caring enough to tell others of this site.

For all who have lost a pet they loved, this made me cry...?

hold me
kiss me
know that where i go
i will wait for you
we'll both run on legs made new
and jump as pups and children do
in a grassy field
that never ends
hold me gently near
kiss me with a tear
i am not afraid
and press these tender words you say
inside my heart
when we forever young will play
in a grassy field that never ends
hold me
kiss me
as i close my eyes
i am not afraidto softly fly away
and press these tender words you say
inside my heart until that day
when we forever young will play
in a grassy field that never ends
hold me
as i die
kiss me
as i close my eyes

I also like this poem:

They say memories are golden well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories, I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a billion times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane
, I'd walk the path to heaven and
bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.
*tears fall* Thats beautiful. thank you.
I liked that. Thanks for sharing. If you have never seen it, look up "The Rainbow Bridge" I think you'll like that as well. And remember, they're always with us in our hearts.
What a beautiful sentiment, thank you for sharing. It made me tear up.

For all those who think they know all about animals and their habits? This is about wolves in the wild.?

If you saw a pack of wolves walking across the top of a mountain, how could you tell which one was the alpha? And why? Am just curious how many people could answer this correctly.
Answers:
yep, it the position of the tail. The alpha always has his raised high.
normally the alpha is in front,if the others get out of line that one will put them back, that one eats first, alpha corrects the other like kids
Alpha males usually have both their tails and ears erect. Sometimes they're leading the pack and sometimes they aren't. The easiest way to tell is to observe every wolf and try to tell from the position of their ears and tail.
Wolf packs are lead by both an alpha male and female. Watching the wolves different body languages would be the most important clue. The dominant pair (alphas) will have a more confident posture such as holding their tail higher and standing taller. Another important clue would be if you happened to witness any scent marking (urination). Both the dominant male and female raise their legs while the subordinate males and females will squat.

Foal Heat Diarrhea?

our foal(9 days old) has diarrhea,i think she seems o.k..
this started after the mare has been on heat.
has this happened to any of your foals?
is it anything to worry about?
Answers:
This is a normal reaction to the mare's being in season. Make sure that you keep the foal's hindquarters clean, however, because the fecal material can burn off the hair and irritate the skin. As long as the baby is bright and perky and continues to nurse normally, there is nothing to worry about. Watch for evidence of fever or discomfort, though- these are signs of an infection that needs treatment. Sometimes, we would give our foals a little bit of Pepto-Bismol when they got the scours- it does seem to make them more comfortable, and it is harmless when given in small doses. Otherwise, don't worry, this will pass... and you will have a happy healthy foal.
Call a Veterinarian for advice. I don't think they charge for advice.
This is normal. It is also called scours. The foal's body is just responding to the mare being in season. The diarrhea can burn the hair off the foals behind if not kept clean, so wash her with mild soapy water, and dry her. It will eventually pass. It happens to every foal.

Fleas in my bedroom carpet... Borax did nothing?

I poured nearly an entire box of borax all over my bedroom carpet 2 nights ago, and since then I have picked 3 fleas off of me and gotten about 10 new bites on my leg... it's getting really disgusting looking at my legs and foot now, there's more than 70 bites on my right leg alone and I'm sick of the mother tucking fleas I just want them all to die swiftly and painfully... what really disappointed me was when I tried to suffocate one of the fleas I caught in a pile of borax. after 10 seconds it was as healthy as a flea can look. the borax does absolutely nothing and I can't believe it. why doesn't borax work for me? If you have any tips on how borax should be used, whether it's even effective at all?? or other DIY ways to exterminate the fleas- (brands of good bug bombs or foggers?) please let me know. I'm desperate.
Answers:
flea bomb it
Tear up the carpet...take it out and burn it..bomb the room!!! Works every time!!
The best thing to do is to go to the pet store and get a spray solution to put on your carpet to kill fleas. I beleive that Hagen makes one. Then you have to make sure that however they got in there in the first place is no longer an issue(ie-Fido). Make sure that your pets are properly protected, otherwise they will keep on coming back.
Another thing to keep in mind is that fleas can live dormant in your carpet for months, and can be "waken up" by movement or vibrations, like a vacuum cleaner. This means that months down the road there is a possibility of another outbreak. Fleas in the house are a pain in the but to get rid of, so good luck.
This is so easy. Go to Ebay and buy the good quality flea drops for your pet. I use Frontline. It soaks into the animals fatty tissue and cannot be washed off. The fleas need to eat so they will jump onto your pet. Once they bite your pet, they will die. Your flea problem will clear up in mere days. You will be amazed.
Fleas live deep in the fiber, unless you are scrubbing it into the carpet it is really not going to help. You need to kill the eggs, to do that you will need to bomb. Get all animals and People out of the house for about 8 hrs, and strip all bedding wash in HOT water. One to try is Combat flea fogger, you will need to set off about 1 per room if they are large areas otherwise follow the directions. You will also want to change any vacuum bags and toss before you do this as well as after, when you get in there and vacuum up, as they can live in the bags.
Best luck
Honestly, I've never heard of Borax for flea problems. Okay, I've had similar problems in the past, largely cause I had no idea at the time what a flea infestion looked like. Several things to do on the cheap, but you are gonna have to get either a fogger and some surface spray. I have a very excellent product to rec and it's only available through online, mail order or a local vet office. Stay away from the stuff they sell in the pet and food stores, it doesn't work. On the cheap side, if you have a vacuum cleaner handy, stick a flea collar either in the bag or if it's bagless, the container that holds the dust and dirt. Run the sweeper. This will pick up any and all fleas, run it several times if need be. The flea collar will kill them. After you've did this, get rid of the bag by wrapping it up in a plastic food bag and throwing it outside in the trash. Same with the bagless, empty out the container in plastic food bag and do the same. If it's outside, the idea is that if any more eggs hatch they will hatch in the trash and not in your house. Next thing is, if you have any clothes or anything on the floor, wash them as soon as possible. Fleas will drown. Do not put them back in the same area, until you've taken care of the problem for real, otherwise any left over flea egg will hatch and get into the clothes. I'm assuming you have pets. You have to treat them as well, and all their bedding or whatever. It all has to be washed. Your pets should either have protection from either a decent flea and tick collar (not food store stuff again) or something like Front-Line. Provided you can afford the stuff. I can't so I use either a 5 month collar by Vet-Kem called Tickaway. They make it for both cats and dogs and despite the name it kills fleas too. Vet-Kem can't be found in stores so you'll have to go to your vets or online. Next cheap thing you can do is get a can of Lysol, you know the stuff you spray to kill odors and germs? It kills adult fleas as well. Spray this on the carpet, on the pet bedding and anywhere your pets are regularly. This will get rid on any living flea. Like I said you still have to do something permanent. Considering the size of your problem, you're best bet may be a 6oz fogger, followed by a surface spray to have ready as a follow up. The ones that I've used and have the most success with have also been made by Vet-Kem. Again, you will not find any of these in pet or food stores. Buying it from a Vet will cost you dearly, but if you can't wait on mail order and can afford it, that's what you'll have to do. You'll need to look for something called Siphotrol Plus II premise Spray. It comes both as a 6oz fogger and a 16oz spray, the great thing about both of these products is that they are water based, don't stink to high heaven and you only have to be out of the area for a relatively short time. You and your pets. 20 minutes for the surface spray and 2 hours for the fogger. This stuff works like no body's business, it will kill all forms of flea, adult and egg. It kicks ticks and controls several other types of unwanted bugs which are listed on the label. Also prevents reinfestation and build-up and lasts like 30 weeks. If you have a yard of any kind, it also comes in a yard forulma, but the surface spray can be used outside in smaller areas, say like your pet only hang out under one bush then you spray under it. But like I said this stuff works. The trick is not to panic, fleas lay thousands of eggs at time, so you have to always keep on top the problem. They also can travel on somebody else pet to your area, they like deep and dark places and they feed on blood. Which is why they bite. But they really want animal blood. Outside Siphotrol Plus, there is one other highly valued product that used by vets and them, but right now I can't recall the right name of it outside that it begins with an M. Hope this helps and stay away from old wives tales about Borax. Go get 'em
The only thing that I found really works...But it's kind of expensive is..."Hartz Mountain" home spray...for carpets (Not really sure of the complete name, but it is in a silver /grey spray bottle) costs about $7.95 a bottle. But it really works!! Gonna' get some myself tomorrow. Here in FL the fleas get real bad when it starts to get hot right after spring. I hope this helps. You can get it just about anywhere pet products are sold...Walmart has about the best price.
