Has anyone ever lost a pet?
i lost a cat and i miss him so much!i wish he was here!

there is a bridge connectin' heaven and earth. it is called 'the rainbow bridge' because of it's many beautiful colors...
just this side of the bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass...when a beloved pet dies, it goes to this place. there is always fresh food and cool water and warm spring weather. the old and frail are made young again...those who were maimed are made whole again. they play all day long with each other in this land.
but there is one thing missing...they are not with their special person who loveed them on earth...
so, each day, they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up... the body quivers, the eyes stare! and this one suddenly runs from the group!...
you have been seen...and when you and yer special friend meet again, you take him in yer arms and embrace...yer faces is kissed again and again as you look once more into the eyes of yer trusting pet...
then ...both of you cross 'the rainbow bridge' together...never again to be separated...

yeah...we lost our maltese dog...we took him out to get his teeth cleaned, and the vet gave him too much anesthetic, then he gave him a counter anesthetic because he didn't think he was waking up fast enough...he had a stroke, couldn't walk and was breathing really fast...didn't know his name and he couldn't even lift his head...before he died he was hemoraging, and then blood came out of his mouth, and then he died...it was the worst thing i ever saw in my entire life...we did an autopsy and it showed that there was blood in his lungs...i wasn't really that sad, but i missed him a lot...it hit my mom and sister really hard.

No. I live on a busy street though and have seen two of my dogs get run over.both as a child. My german shepard by a fire truck and a poodle by a corvette. No one saw it coming.

OMG, OF COURSE!!! I used to have a cute black %26 white rat as a pet. And let me tell u something. They are the most cleanest, social, %26 friendly animals in the world. People give such bad names to rats that everbody thinks they're ugly %26 nasty %26 gross. But its just the opposite. Got to PETCO %26 buy one. Its really fun. =)

Domestic rats can be wonderful pets-- a lot less testy than hamsters and ferrets. They keep themselves clean (which doesn't actually mean that their cage is odorless unfortunately...) and they're VERY intellegent.
Of course, my best friend used to work at pet store and she said she could always tell when one of the kids that worked under her forgot to feed the rats.
They have a tendancy to cannibalize.
If you're interested in getting a rodent pet, get a guinea pig. They grow to be about one or two pounds heavier than a rat and they look like over-sized hamsters. They also have to be seriously harrassed into biting you. Sweetest little things I've ever worked with.
i breed rats and all of mine are good rats. i have about 20 of them and they are good rats. i think they are all good if you know how to care and handle them. if any one says they are all bad then they have never owned a rat before. yes there are good rats and yesthere are bad rats but the bad rats are usually sold as food for snakes. i breed mine for myself and for pet stores in my area. i love my rats and so do my kids. rats are great pets for kids also.

I have read about all the scams and what not and I was just wondering what people thought about the process as long as they took the money upon receipt of the animal.

Has anyone else heard? Rabbit Owners?
I doubt this applies to many folks that use this board, but I thought I would mention it. There's been an outbreak of the Calicivirus in pet rabbits in the Adelaide SA region. Calici is used to control wild rabbits, but is affecting captive rabbits in the area. Anyone who has a pet rabbit that is not immunised should do so immediately! The first signs are no appetite for 12 to 24 hours, followed by internal bleeding, then death. Good luck Bunny owners!

Has anybody heard of Brenderup horse trailers?
I need a horse trailer, but only have a Honda Odyssey and a Toyota Highlander and cant afford a truck. Are they any good? What is there average price? Do you think my cars would work? Thanks!

In my opinion, you are just asking for trouble with trying to tow a trailer of any kind with the two vehicles you have. You really need a truck for towing any kind of a heavy load. That is what they are made for. Cars are only good for a short distance with a lighter trailer. (think very small Uhaul). I do not think that you could haul your horse safely with a car or that your car would last very long under these conditions. You may want to think about trading them on for a truck. Good Luck

Has anybody ever dealt with an eye injury with their horse?
I never in my years with horses have dealt with an eye injury. My mare started tearing up about about two weeks ago and her eye would run. I thought perhaps allergies, and she didn't seem to be in pain, so I didn't think much of it. But it continued, so today I had the vet out to look at her.
She has an ulcer on her eye and has to take both a pill and and have cream in her eye 4 times a day. She still has sight in the eye and the vet seems to think she'll be okay and we caught it early, but I guess I just want some reassurance an ulcer will clear up with proper care and be fine. I feel really bad that I didn't recognize it as an injury at first and wasted time having a vet look at her. If anybody else has dealt with eye injuries in horses or knows of a good resource in which to get information, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Pet stores get their hamsters from a specific ''breeder''. They're not allowed, by the corporation, to accept hamsters from just anyone. If they accepted your hamsters, they wouldn't be able to sell them, they'd basically have a ''free to good home'' sign on them.
Check your local shelters %26 rescues to see if they will take in your hamsters.
Petco may take them the petco near me takes them and puts them up for adoption but you dont get payed. Or you could check out petfinder www.petfinder.com

If you have a new hamster- here's some advice.
1. give him time to adjust to his surroundings. Don't try to handle him right away. Just make sure that you spend time talking to him, get him use to your presence, even if you pass him on the way to the bathroom talk to him. Even if he's sleeping say something.
this will get him use to your presence and your voice.
2. start slow when physically interacting. Put your hand in the cage and let him sniff you- offer a treat from your hand, don't pick him up right away- if he bites you don't yell or jerk your hand away.. just say "Gentle" as you slowly retract your hand.
3. when it comes time to pick them up (usually after a few days of letting them adjust and get use to you), pick him up slowly from an area he is most comfortable. (Mine likes me to pick up up from his petting center rather than reaching into his cage and pulling him out through the door. He must feel more secure.
cup him in both hand securly- but don't squeeze. Get on the floor and hold him close to you so he knows you're not going to drop him, and if you accidentally do- it won't have as far to fall.
if he nips you out of fear the first couple of times, just take a deep breath and resist the urge to drop him.
after a while of taking it slow and getting him to trust you- he'll be like my black bear hammie.
Doki Doki will follow me around the house like a puppy dog when he's in his roll about ball... and if he hears my voice even when sleeping, he'll get excited and run out to greet me.

All the russian breeds I've come across have been pretty nasty. Some are tamable... some males aren't. Its the nature of the breed. But for the ones that can be tamable... it just takes more time than usual, lots of patience, and working on it every day.
Chinese Dwarf Hammies can also be nippy- but only when they're scared or hungry. they're generally very docile.
Winter Whites seem to be the easiest of the dwarfs to train... but I notice they're attracted to shiney things, because they allways nip me accidentally when trying to take off my bracelets or the pink sparkly ring I wear on my middle finger.

if things don't improve, you may want to consider taking it to a vet, as he may have some underlying health issues. Sometimes grumpiness can be from not feeling well.
Keep an eye on his tail. Stress can cause a condition known as "wet tail." Its basically diarrhea, which gets caked all over the pootie area and makes the tail look wet. If this ever occurs, go to a vet as it can be deadly in the first 24 hours of symptoms!!! have a bottle of Dritail nearby. Dritail is a weak antibiotic that generally doesn't cure- just helps slow the symptoms. This will be good on say- a weekend when your vet is closed until you can get in to see the vet.
they're also suseptable to overgrown teeth. Make sure they have lots of chew toys and block food to promote good teeth health.
on a side note: Newman seems the perfect name for a grumpy puss. It just seems to fit. Lol.

If this ever occurs, go to a vet as it can be deadly in the first 24 hours of symptoms!!! have a bottle of Dritail nearby. Dritail is a weak antibiotic that generally doesn't cure- just helps slow the symptoms. This will be good on say- a weekend when your vet is closed until you can get in to see the vet.
they're also suseptable to overgrown teeth. Make sure they have lots of chew toys and block food to promote good teeth health.
on a side note: Newman seems the perfect name for a grumpy puss. It just seems to fit. Lol.
offer him a treat let him come to you. keep doing this and things should change in time. hamsters are really timid. i have 4 hamsters and when i got them as baby's i just keeped doing the same thing over and now they are really good pets. they never bite.

Some how the hampster has been hurt when someone has picked him up. This is what I do to a mean hamster. I buy a pr of leather gloves. Rub them in his poop to get the scent on them. Pick him up with the gloves and feed him a treat. Do this for a week. After a week take off one glove after picking him up. (make sure you wash your hands well) the scent on your hands could bother him. Feed him a treat with your bear hand.

Hamsters usually live up to three years with good care.
When feeding your hamster it's best to get a bag of food from the store. The bags usually consist of seeds, dried vegatables and fruit pieces. They have treats with vitamins available for hamsters too. They need about a teaspoon of food when they are small.
They are easy to care for, their cages need to be cleaned once every 5 days or so. Fresh water and fresh water daily is needed.
There are many type of hamsters. Teddy bears seem to be most docile whereas dwarf hamsters have attitudes.
I would say a kid past 8 or so can have a hamster. A hamster as a pet does take time. Watering, feeding and the responsibilty of cleaning the cage should be done by the kid and if they don't have time, are not willing or capable to do this they don't need a pet just yet.
Your local library should have books if you need more information and then again the store where you purchase your hamster should have guideline sheets to help you care for your pet. Google hamsters and you'll get all kinds of information.

I think that for a small child (under 8) you may be better off with a rabbit or guinea pig, but if you really want a hamster I would suggest a teddy bear one, not a dwarf hamster (they can be nippy).

I'd recommend a Teddy Bear Ham for a small child, because thye don't bite as much, and are extrememly cuddly, very cute, soft. And love to be held and played with.

My personal favorite is the long hair teddy bears. their coats are so beautiful.
My hamsters each had their own personalities and quirks which made them wonderful to watch and interact with. But they also do need daily companionship and attention - a lot of attention and freedom. Hamsters are driven to escape their cages and I cannot tell you how many creative ways mine figured out how to get out. So, I always made sure my hamsters did get free time out of their cages for a good amount of time each day.
I get very angry when I see hamsters left in smelly cages all day with no free time or interaction. So be sure before you buy!

They are the largest of the breeds making them slower, more placid, and much more laid back, especially the males. The smaller breeds like the russian, or dwarf hamsters are more nippy and fast. They tend to bite alot more.
Me and my husband got our hamster a year ago and he is a great little guy, ( he is a syrian ) He NEVER bites, has his own cute little personality and loves human company.
My advice to you is, bear in mind that although hamsters are small, they need just as much love and care as a dog or a cat. they are prone to infections and diseses easily if you dont clean out their cage propely and can die quickly as a result so really be scrupulous when cleaning out the cage weekly. Also buy the biggest cage you possibily can. Large cage equals a happy hamster. They are fab pets for all ages and have that "cute" factor that keeps you ammused for hours.
I have 8 Dwarf Cambells all are excellent pets and no biters among them. 2 Robo Dwarfs which are non-biters but you cannot handle them because they are just too fast. 2 Syrian Long haired both are very gentle and sweet and love to snuggle. In my opinion the person who owns the hamster determines whether their hamster will be a biter or not. A hamster which is handled gently and calmly will be a non-biter. One which is hand fed no matter the age will also wind up being a non-biter and yes you can turn a biter into a non-biter. Patience and love can turn even the most vicious of hamsters into a non-biter. We adopted one hamster which was maltreated and was a very bad biter and was extremely aggressive and he is calmer and kinder and does not bite.
As for the sex of the hamster that is your own personal choice, males have a scent gland which they rub on everything while females have a scent on them all the time. Neither stink as was suggested by someone else unless you don't let them have a sand bath and don't clean their cages regularly.
There are many sites out there about hamsters but my favorite is hamsterific.com. You can learn a lot about different types of hamsters.
My suggestion to you is to find out as much information regarding the breed of hamster you want and go from there.
If this is your first pet and you want something you will be able to handle easily then I would suggest a Syrian since they are larger and as I call mine 3 toed sloths. :)
get a syrian only one they aren't social, use aspen or super shavins bedding so it dosn't get respiratory disease, do not use an aquarium, get a critter trail at petsmart, aquariums breed bacteria due to no airflow. females is all they sell at petsmart, u can get a handbook there that will tell u all u need to know. I have 3 hamsters all in separate cages, one blackbear, shorthair, longhair. u can get panda bear, honey bear etc pick the one you like and check it out before u buy it, look at ears, should have no white hairs, that indicates age, usually they are 2 months old at petsmart for sale.

Me and my husband got our hamster a year ago and he is a great little guy, ( he is a syrian ) He NEVER bites, has his own cute little personality and loves human company.
My advice to you is, bear in mind that although hamsters are small, they need just as much love and care as a dog or a cat. they are prone to infections and diseses easily if you dont clean out their cage propely and can die quickly as a result so really be scrupulous when cleaning out the cage weekly. Also buy the biggest cage you possibily can. Large cage equals a happy hamster. They are fab pets for all ages and have that "cute" factor that keeps you ammused for hours.
I have 8 Dwarf Cambells all are excellent pets and no biters among them. 2 Robo Dwarfs which are non-biters but you cannot handle them because they are just too fast. 2 Syrian Long haired both are very gentle and sweet and love to snuggle. In my opinion the person who owns the hamster determines whether their hamster will be a biter or not. A hamster which is handled gently and calmly will be a non-biter. One which is hand fed no matter the age will also wind up being a non-biter and yes you can turn a biter into a non-biter. Patience and love can turn even the most vicious of hamsters into a non-biter. We adopted one hamster which was maltreated and was a very bad biter and was extremely aggressive and he is calmer and kinder and does not bite.
As for the sex of the hamster that is your own personal choice, males have a scent gland which they rub on everything while females have a scent on them all the time. Neither stink as was suggested by someone else unless you don't let them have a sand bath and don't clean their cages regularly.
There are many sites out there about hamsters but my favorite is hamsterific.com. You can learn a lot about different types of hamsters.
My suggestion to you is to find out as much information regarding the breed of hamster you want and go from there.
If this is your first pet and you want something you will be able to handle easily then I would suggest a Syrian since they are larger and as I call mine 3 toed sloths. :)
get a syrian only one they aren't social, use aspen or super shavins bedding so it dosn't get respiratory disease, do not use an aquarium, get a critter trail at petsmart, aquariums breed bacteria due to no airflow. females is all they sell at petsmart, u can get a handbook there that will tell u all u need to know. I have 3 hamsters all in separate cages, one blackbear, shorthair, longhair. u can get panda bear, honey bear etc pick the one you like and check it out before u buy it, look at ears, should have no white hairs, that indicates age, usually they are 2 months old at petsmart for sale.

on the bottom left side theres a tab that says Pet care info click on that and that will lead you to a list of different forms of info - I suggest clicking on care info sheets; Its like a handout you can download onto your computer from there just click on hamster and it'll give you all the basic info you need to know to really impress her and educate yourself on how to care for a possible new pet.good luck

There are certain breeds that will never, ever get along, and certain breeds that will.
You should NEVER put two Syrian hamsters together! They are territorial, to the point of fighting to the death over their territory!
Dwarf hamsters, however, are known for their ability to get along with one another, be it a same sex couple from the same litter or not. Though with ANY animal grouping that hasn't been done before, you need to be there to supervise the entire time -- and you should make SURE they are the same sex, or you'll be having more on your plate than just two fighting hamsters! Dwarf hamsters still have their occasional squabbles, but it will be nothing compared to the dangerous, injury causing, and sometimes fatal fighting that can happen between Syrian hamsters.
So, save yourself heartache and worry, if you have two Syrian hamsters, DON'T put them together. If you have two Dwarf hamsters, feel free to try.
Note: You also CANNOT put a Dwarf with a Syrian. Dwarf hamsters cannot deal well with adjusting to the solitary habits of a Syrian, and may turn out to be the agressor in this situation. Dwarf + Syrian = Bad. Syrian + Syrian = Bad.

Well thats kind of touch and go it really depends on the age of the animals. If the one is older then the other then you have a problem. When one is older even by a couple of months then there is sinority there along with strength and wisdom. The younger of the two is in for a fight and possably a really good beating.

Hamsters in London Flat - good idea or bad?
Are there any general trends you've noticed from Landlords regarding caged pets that I should know about?

Check with your landlord, but I personally wouldn't have a problem. They're small, quiet, and aren't smelly if you keep the cage clean. Good little pets!
as long as they pay the rent and don't have too many rowdy parties,then who cares. But gerbils might be a different matter...

What colours do they see? How far can they see?
and is their sence of smell good?

hamster have notoriously poor vision. Don't know about colors. They have a very good sense of smell and act mostly off of this. This is the need for washing hands prior to handling, they often smell food so bite assuming it is food. As far as distance, well it is not uncommon to see a hamster walk right off the edge of a table due to not seeing it.
they can smell a chicken nugget from a half mile away, upwind. they see all colors and have vision like a hawk. hamsters are natures perfect killing machines.
I know for sure that hamsters have incredibly awful vision, and as a result their hearing and their sense of smell are both very heightened...the reason they have poor eye sight is because they are nocturnal so, like cats, they see better in a dark room with maybe a night light or moon light to guide them...however it really doesn't matter what lighting they are in because they have such excellent senses of smell that they can easily navigate just about anywhere
